How did you make that quantum leap? If you are correct, why isn't blaze orange the only allowable color for cars? This is about as sensible as your post about seven out of ten hunters losing their lives because they weren't wearing blaze orange.

Hey it was your warped analogy with cars.....not mine. If you want to nitpick you could use the seatbelt law with cars in comparison to blaze orange in hunting. Do you feel nobody should be allowed to tell you to wear a seatbelt either? Heck it's your life right? How dare they? How about speed limits? It's your life you should be able to dictate how fast you drive. Drinking and driving? Heck with it no big deal you can probably hold your liquor. You'll tell them when you've had enough and you can't drive right? Stop signs? ehhhhhhhhhh overated what if you don't feel like stopping.

This is about as sensible as your post about seven out of ten hunters losing their lives because they weren't wearing blaze orange.
What is so insensible about a stat that 70% of hunters killed were NOT wearing BO? You need a calculator or further explanation?

By the way, that was not your original statement. It was as follows:
"They put the chance of not being spotted by a buck above 7 out of 10 hunters losing their lives?" This statement clearly states that seven out of ten hunters lose their lives. I would submit that as stated, this is so far from the truth as to be ridiculous. Your later statement is not the same. in the post prior to this one, you state: "What is so insensible about a stat that 70% of hunters killed were NOT wearing BO? You need a calculator or further explanation?" Now, you have made a better statement, but one open to challenge by statistical analysis. I will use statistics for Pennsylvania during the past four years for this.

Statistics regarding hunters killed in mistake for game:
year wearing orange not wearing orange

2004 1 0
2003 NR NR
2002 1 2
2001 NR NR

In most years, the color of clothing was not reported. The statistics above for two years, 2002 and 2004 would indicate that out of four persons killed, two were in fact wearing blaze orange. Here is the website address at which you can look up the other years.
http://www.pgc.state.pa.us/pgc/cwp/view.asp?a=461&q=158315

There is nothing wrong with your statistic, except that you cite no source for it and therefore, it is suspect. If you wish it to be taken seriously, please provide a source.

My analogy to cars was not far-fetched at all. If mandatory blaze orange makes hunting accidents less likely to happen, shouldn't it be required for cars? It should make cars more visible and therefore there would be fewer collissions? Or don't you like the state choosing your car's color?

I dont' know. Are there any stats in color of vehicles in relation to accidents? There are stats of people killed in accidents that weren't wearing their seatbelts (hence the seatbelt law). There are substantial stats on deaths caused by DWI (hence the driving while intoxicated laws). There are stats on accidents caused by unsafe speeds (hence the speed limits) etc.............. I've never heard of any coorelation to car color and vehicle collisions or I'm sure that would be considered as well.

But as I said before........................... whatever floats your boat. Good luck this season and be safe.

There are some stats out there some where, on car color vs drivers ability to see and how far etc...etc.. Only color I remember is yellow [X(]

Anyway - BO isn't or shouldn't just be about the 1st person (I or Me). It has alot to do with the 3rd parties/family and friends whose lives are affected by the loss of a non BO wearing mocho hunter. Not to mention the cost factors in these hunter fatalitys.

Im surprised I havent heard any comments about my post. Its not about you being able to choose to wear orange. Its about the other guys right to be able to see you. And Im not talking about identifying your target, that should be a given. Its about shooting at a known target and not knowing a person/hunter could be beyond it. If you see a buck run across a field, and see orange beyond it, you dont shoot. Now, with noorange, does that mean no hunter??? Why should MY life be ruined because my responsible shot still hit a hunter not visible to me, when some blaze orange wouldve prevented it? Im illustrating why it isnt up to you to choose. Youre actions, or lack of action, affects others around you, thus the mandate.

As for turkey hunting, guys have used BO decoys, tree ribbons and backwards vests for years. I dont see any reason to change that now. Poor hunting ethics, like moving in on someone while turkey hunting, kills many hunters. It all comes down to accountability, and sadly, laws get enacted to at least try to balance the playing field.

PAturkeyhunter, you have some solid points, as for the facts it was just a statement to open my thread, not a jab at you or what you wrote eariler. As for spring turkey I would be against BO for that. Your right stupid people who don't know what they are doing ruin it for everyone. You need to know what your doing. That's one of my biggest gripes about BO, it's not for people who know what they ar doing it's for the stupid people, but since we don't really know who they are we have to generalize it to make it safer for us. I'm not saying that you have to look like a pumpkin, just some orange to see you. Plus it helps people like me not go into one of my properties if I see orange, I will look for another spot to go, nothing like someone busting up you hunt or walking up on you. I cannot stand it, so by wearing orange I can make sure it will not happen to others. I agree that someone who shoots somebody shuld go to jail, accident or not, you need to know what's beyond your target, you are fully reponsiable for that bullet and what it hits. Ignorance is no excuse!!!!!

lou-lou Let me get this straight. If your hunting and have looked over your shooting area good and know there is nobody around then I (a few minutes later) come still hunting in brown overalls 200 yards away and kicks up a 150 class buck in your direction you will be able to see me and won't shoot at that buck because I'm in that direction. And if you unfortunately shoot me because of my stupidity of walking around the woods in brown you should go to jail. Interesting.

lou-lou, I'm pretty certain I could hide form ya at 200 yardswearing camo. That's the point isn't it? not being seen? So if you miss a deer and shoot me you should go to jail?

Lou-lou if I am reading your posts right you are for blaze orange during deer seaon because it will help save lives but against it during turkey season . You seem to be contradicting yourself if its good for one season to save lives it should be good for all seasons for the same reason
