Hubby takes a .22 with him and my Dad carries a pistol (.44 I think but am not sure). We use dogs and hubby goes in to where the dogs are baying and dispatches the hog. My Dad stays on his mule and watches for any running out. I am the official mule holder for hubby -- and I take my job seriously!!! Basically I am along for the ride when we hunt here but do hunt hogs when we go bowhunting in West Texas.

Hope you enjoy hunting ... it is exciting!

Unfortunately, 18 years ago during my HS graduation beach trip, Myrtle Beach's finest charged me with illegal marijuana possesion, so now the sheriff where I live won't issue a license to buy a handgun! LOL! As for rifles, I don't know... I enjoy getting my shotgun out for some practice once in a while, but overall I've got to admit I'm just not really "into" guns thatmuch-not that I'm against them or anything- I've had a lot of fun when friends have invited me to try out their new weapons! But bows, thats a whole 'nother world! Love shooting them!

Never really been charged while hunting hogs, but sometimes when you jump one they will kinda make a bluff run at you and then veer off. Sometimes you can walk right on top of them before they bust out of a brush pile. That will make you wet your pants! [:-] I read a story in Boar Hunter magazine about a guy in California that tried to jump a charging hog. When the hog ran underneath him he threw his head sideways, and cut the femoral artery in the mans leg. The guy bled to death before they could get him to the hospital. I'm sure this is more rare than getting struck by lightning, but it just goes to show, wild animals are unpredictable. Always be prepared to run, shoot, or climb a tree....while praying.

10-4!
Human Health and Safety:
Most directly, whether it be a 300-400 lb. boar with 4 inch tusks, or a sow with pigs, these animals are formidable and will attack people. More than one hunter has been treed by aggressive sows who sense that their piglets are in danger. People are also at risk from these animals that are infected with swine brucellosis. This disease has been found in wild pigs in ten states and is known as undulant fever in humans. It can be contracted through handling infected tissues of wild pigs.
