Default Best way to store a rifle in the box

I have one or two rifles that I want to put away for awhile. I'm going to put a coat of break free on the metal parts, but is there anything I need to do to the walnut stock when storing? Or is there something I should use besides break free? I figured its good enough for the military it should be good for my guns.

I asked a gunshop this very same question once, and they recommended a product called RIG....Rust inhibiting grease for the rifling. I dunno I never tried it, so take it for what its worth.

F4YG, Mossy33oak beat me to it. I would recommend getting a sheepskin wipe and use RIG.IMHO you can't beat RIG.I've been using it for many years and it's always protected my guns.I very seldom check them knowing they have RIG applied. For the Walnut stock it wouldn't hurt to get a good furniture polish or furniture wax. I've never waxed or polished any of mine.Main thing keep them in a dry location. If it were me I would store the boxes seperate from the guns. Keep the guns in a safe and the boxes in a safe place.I found for storing firearms what works well especially with handguns. Wipe them down with RIG and insert them in storage bags or freezer bags. A old friend taught me that when I first started out with guns.Been doing it ever since.

Thanks Guys I will look into the RIG stuff you recommend. RR, I was wanting to store the rifles in their boxes due to the safe being overcrowded. I really can't afford a new safe right now. I guess if I'm extra careful I can squeeze them in the safe. What about gun socks? How much protection do they really provide? I believe some of them are treated with something.

F4YG the safe situation is a on going problem for allot of us.Seems like whatever size someone buys they always seem to shrink.I've been there and done that.
I've seen these "Gun Socks" advertised but that's about it. I've never taken the time to look at them.I believe they are treated with probably silicone. How much protection they offer I don't know.

I solved a storage problem years ago for handguns. I got some 1/2"solid rod. I mounted the rod above a shelf I made for extra precaution in case something was to go wrong. If for some reason the rods were to give way the guns could only fall a couple inches. The Rods go width wise almost to the top of the safe. I then made separate bags for the guns to go in. I wipe them down with RIG,put them in the plastic bags. Then they are inserted in the bags I made. I took Hog Rings and put them through the tops of the bags. I got some Cafe Curtain rod hooks.Put the hooks through the hog rings and hang them on the rods.Same principal has hanging clothes in your closet.I put some small tags on the bags so it's easy to identify what's in the bag. It's just like moving your clothes.Slide them to one side get what you're looking for.You can hang allot of guns in a small space. It was an idea I came up with and it has worked out really good.

F4YG I should have mentioned allot of gun shops carry RIG. Almost all shooter suppliers have it. You can get it either in a small tube or a few ounce jar.The stuff is very inexpensive and lasts forever.Natchez Shooting Supply sell it and they have the sheepskin wipes. The SS wipe are just a little over 6.00ea. I just bought 4 more a couple weeks ago.My older ones are about worn out.

Yes sir I'm a strong believer in RIG.

It's the greatest thing since Welfare LOL. Did I really say that.

I like to use Hydrosorbent Silica Gel, Hyskore Gun Vault Desiccant, or just desiccant bags found in some factory packaged products. Good luck.

Thanks Again Guys for the advice.

RR, Good idea with hanging your pistols. Maybe you should apply for a patent on your hanging file system. Make a Million dollars and buy me a new safe for suggesting it.

F4YG I appreciate the kinds words. Geez I let the cat out of the bag.I could have been a millionaire in no time.I used to do upholstery so I have a sewing machine from back then.It only takes a few minutes to make a bag.I am considering applying for a patent on something else I came up with.Attachment for handguns on treestands.Naturally I can't go into details.I made one as a Gov't project. It worked out so good the idea of a patent came into play. I promise my first million you'll get a new safe.I wouldn't hold my breath though.

Moisture and condensation is what one fights on the metal, as for the wood if its got a oil finish,a little boiled linseedd oil on it would be great or some treewax. I think the metal has been covered, but rem does have some fine products for the metal as well . vangunsmith
