Any pump action shotgun would do for a good first time shotgun. I personally just bought a Mossgerg 500 Combo for 300 including Tax. It came with a Field Barrel for shooting shot and a rifled barreled for shooting slugs.
I love my Mossberg so far. I didn't have to pay an arm and a leg for it either.

DairyKing,
I have Browning A-5's, Remington Mod 11, 1148's,1100's,1187's.
For a starter like you, check out the Rem 870 Combo 12ga.....
You will be able to do everything that you stated. Later on if you
are intrested, check out the better quality guns.

I have a mossberg 500 for over 14 years now.. It is a solid gun for the price. Can't go wrong with it.. shoots anything i put in it and has been reliabe even in terrible weather. I really believe that there is little difference between a $275 shotgun and a $1000 if they both shoot shells without malfunction. I have my shotgun to shoot, not to stair at for it's beauty.

But, what should I look for in a gun? Im sure there is a "draw length" in a shotgun. I heard that your nose is supposed to be a certain distance from where the stock curves up to where the barrel is, and stuff like that?

dude you dont need a 12 gage for the thingd that you just listed. a 20 or a 16 will do just as good. one great company that all have overlooked is ITHACA GUN Co. they make pump guns that shoot great, are light weigh, relighable, and are perfectly ballanced. they run about $500 and are a great gun. for what ur hunting you will proably want a 26-28 inch barrel. 28 being a little long of rrabbit hunting. your hunting mostly smaller game and a 20 will be more han enough gun. if you do decide to hunt deer with this gun get a 24inch rifled slug barrel and shoot lightfield ammo. this combo will kill deer out to 150+ yards. about the max of a shotgun. good luck and seriously take a look at the Ithacas.
