Changing a 10/22 barrell

Changing a 10/22 barrell
I am about to buy a ruger 10/22 22lr. The WalMart near me has one for under $200. I was looking at all the aftermarket accessories for it, and saw that I could get a .17HMR barrell for it. I need to know how difficult it is to change the barrell out. Is this something I could do myself, or would I need to take it to a gunsmith. I don't have any experience doing this sort of thing, so, anything too complicated would be over my head. Also, if I wanted to put it in a different stock, what would be involved in that also? The stock I saw said that it was drop in, but that doesn't mean much to me.
Thanks

One thing that you might want to check is if the 22 lr action can be used for the .17hmr. There is a good 3/8” difference in length between the 2 bullets. You would also require new clips because the 17 is to long and will not fit into the 22lr clip. I would inquire more on your project before buying the goods.

you can not change a .22lr into a 17hmr, the 17hmr barrel is for a 10/22 chambered in 22 mag. you can buy conversions to change your .22 into a 17m2. there is some work required because the preasure curve of a .22lr and 17m2 are different. go to www.rimfirecentral.com theres lots of into on customizing your 10/22.

I was just looking at that stuff again, and realized I was looking at barrells for the 77/22. My mistake. But I still would like to know about changing the barrell. I would like to put a heavy "bull" barrell on it, and maybe a camo stock.

Take the stock off ( 1 straight screw)
Un screw the barrel retainer ( 1 allen screw)
remove barrel ,may need to twist a little.
Should take 2 min max and 2 min to re install ( if you have the tools handy )
You will have to get a stock for a heavy barrel if you go that way.

I think I have found the stock and barrel I want,
stock - CoreLite synthetic stock in mossy oak breakup
barrel - Green Mountain Blued/Fluted 20" barrel.
I have been reading the site referenced above, and it has me totally confused. They were talking about bedding the action and floating the barrel. Is this something I will have to do, or is it something to do just for accuracy. I know what they are, but would have no idea how to go about do any of this stuff. As I alluded to in my first post. I have absolutely no experience with working on guns.

I never did , and don't think you need to unless you are trying to shoot some kind of 22 rifle matches.
I have a .920 di. barrel from MIdway and it shoots clover leafs at 50 yds if I do my part and use the right ammo.
The only thing I did was put in a new Volquartsen preped hammer to lighten the trigger pull.

it jsut depends some stock only have semi inletting and you will ahve to go in witha dermel tool to make your action fit properly. bedding your action is just for added accuracy and flaoting the barrel does the same. floating the barrel is simple it can be done with some sand paper.

I just saw them do it on OLN. It was on "Sightingin With Shooting USA" with Jim Scoutten. They should replay it again sometime this weekend. It was a very simple process. Just like johnch outlined. Good luck.
