I have the same rifle in .270 with laminated stock, free floated the barrel and trigger down to three pounds pull. It is a tack driver and murder on whitetails.
I use Winchester Ballistic Silvertips in 130 grains. You will like the rifle it is a hunter's rifle.

I have owned way too many rifles to even try and list them including ruger MKI and MKII and I would choode a ruger over a rem or win any day. I think you bought a very good rifle. As most of the others said, tune or replace the trigger and you will love it.

Way to go ruger redhawk. Im ready to get one my self. I have to wait till thanksgiving day to bust out my rifle but Ive been shootin it . This bowseason has been mosquito filled and hot.
Good Luck Borty, One thing about it if you don't get one you can't blame the rifle.I shot a third one and watched it drop.I sat in my stand for a few minutes before coming down. While I was up there I saw movement 30 yards from where I dropped it.All excite forgot I had my binoculars and kept watching.I marked where the movement was.I went where I shot it. I looked for 3 hours and never found that deer. It was some thick stuff perfect Rattlesnake country.I covered allot of area on the 4 wheeler.I never found blood but I know I hit him.As soon as I squeezed the trigger he dropped. As thick as it was I could have gone by it several times and never caught a glimps of it.My Ruger 7mm RM likes the Rem Core Lokts 150 grain. I tried Federal Premium Ballistic Tips. It hated them. It wouldn't group any better then 3"-3.5" .I've had good luck with CoreLokts. I'm sure there is a better bullet which I hope to use one day.I would like to find a Ballatic tip my Ruger will digest.

I'm one of the few folks you will hear from that seems to have gotten a bad Ruger. My M77 MkII .30-06 gives me fits with accuracy problems, even after my gunsmith did trigger work and bedding for me. Extensive reload experiments have yet to yield a load which will group consistently.[:@] In spite of this, I still have managed to kill deer and wild boar with this rifle, so even though it doesn't shoot tiny groups it does shoot well enough to kill game cleanly.

My buddy, on the other hand, got an M77 MkII .30-06 in stainless with the newer style synthetic stock. His is a very accurate rifle. I offered to trade him, with predictable results.

I'm not done tinkering with my Ruger yet, but be advised, ANY rifle maker can ship a rifle that behaves badly. I've got three other bolt action hunting rifles that are all great shooters, a Remington, a Winchester and a CZ550. The Winchester needed it's trigger lightened and barrel floated before I cared to shoot it in front of witnesses, the Remington did ok but needed a handload developed, and the CZ needed no work at all, shooting MOA even with cheap PMC 6.5 Swede factory loads.

If you DO happen to ever get a lemon Ruger, don't make the mistake that I did and take it to your gunsmith; let Ruger have a crack at it first. Ruger's customer service has a well deserved reputation for excellence. Ruger rifles are a great value and are, in my opinion, one of the more eye-pleasing rifles available. In spite of my own experience I would not hesitate to buy another Ruger.

Thanks, I was kind of skeptical about Ruger's accuracy from some of the reviews that I read. Once I got my leupold on the mark the rifle is shooting great, and I'm just shooting out of the back of my truck. Ruger Redhawk, that was a fine little buck you got. I unfortunately lost a deer last year that I shot late in the evening with buckshot, but now I have a couple of beagles that love to run deer so I will have a little help if a trail dog is needed. Most of my friends who use the 06 say they haven't had a deer run off when hit in the vitals. I'm happy I chose the ruger so far, kind of wish I got the .270 but the 06 will do anything I can put it up to. Later good luck
