Default Ruger Frontier opinions?

I hunt deer & hog in central Florida, in some of the most nasty thick stuff you could imagine, like its almost impossible to spit and decided i wanted something compact but didnt want to hinder overall range too much. I also like the scout style rifles such as Styer Scouts where i can use optics designed to hunt with both eyes open. I then ran across the Ruger Frontier. I have a older Ruger 10/22 that is by far the most flawless, accurateshooting rifle i have ever had so i am a big supporter of this brand. Has anyone had any experience with the Frontier? I was lookingto the 7-08 or 308 cartridge. I need something that can easily reach out to 200-250yrds when needed but will have average shots of 50-100 yrds. The short barrel would be handy as a brush style rifle. Prices seem to range from decent to extreme...538.00-750.00? not including $25 transfer fee's.

I love the short barreled 7mm08 bolt rifles as they perform wayyy out ofproportion to what you would think-I own 3,2 for me and 1 for my babygirl(which she's deadly with).Try www.galleryofguns.com for lowest local price.

for those short ranges, I might consider a lever action gun.

yes lever action rifles would be a great choice...im just not a big fan of the "ole western" styling. Had also considered the mini 30 Ruger......

I would stay away from the Ruger Mini14s, and Mini30s. They are not known for being accurate, not even for the distances you are shooting.

I was playing with a Frontier rifle the other day at the gunshop, I thought it'd make a grrrrreat, short, pickup rifle.

How about one of the remington pumps or auto's. At one time they made a carbine model. Not a bad little gun.

Ya, was reading about the accuracy of the mini30 and doesnt seem to be top notch. Sad because its a great looking gun from a well respected company but then again, i dont think it was designed mainly for hitting the woods and taking out hogs and deer either. I love the fact that with the Frontier, you can use a handgun style scope with long eye relief and hunt with both eye's open. What a difference when your tracking something thru the woods with this scout setup.... try tracking a fast moving animal with a standard scope... can be done but not so easy.
Maybe i will just keep my 16" barreled AK47 near by, i know it will do the job without flinching....
