Default Ruger 77 mk11 .30-06 opinions?

I just recently bought the ruger 77 in .30-06 in the all weather stainless. It was a tough decisison on which caliber to get and walnut stock or synthetic. I am going to be hunting whitetails in north florida and alabama on food plots, pines, and some in hardwoods. I got the 150 core lokt psp. Anyone have an opinion about this rifle? I basically got it to use in the rain and light snow to keep my other rifle in good shape. I don't plan on having any work done it has shot tight groups at 100 yds plus.

I also have a browning abolt micro medalion in 7mm-08, I haven't gotten to use it much but it shoots great at the range.

Borty77 welcome to the forum. You picked a fine rifle and caliber to boot. I have several of the M77's mostly MKII's. I'm very happy with all of them that I have fired. I have some that never have been shot.I like the "All Weather" for the same reason you gave.I would recommend after the season find a good gunsmith and have your trigger lightened. A buddy did several of mind brought them down to 3-3.5 pounds. A big improvement. My primary deer rifle is a Ruger M-77 All Weather in 7mm Rem Mag.It's one that had the trigger lightened and made a big improvement. You made a great choice in gun and caliber. I have a
30-06 and 270 "All Weather" neither have been shot.I shot a 7 point opening day in Georgia using my 7mm and a 3 point the following afternoon.Looks like it's gonna be a good year.

Sounds like a nice rifle. I use a MK II 308 Winchester and it has proven it's self as a very deadly deer rifle. I'm sure your rifle will be just fine for your needs, but of course I'm partial to the 308 round, which I've had much success and numerous quick clean kills of northern Michigan deer. If your shooting longer ditances the 06 should be a nice round. Most of my deer have been shot within 75 yards and I've found the 308 round to have plenty of power. I've heard the deer down your way aren't quite as large as the ones up north, but have no real knowledge of it. I would second the trigger work if you find it rough or with to much creep. I wound't hesitate to purchae another Ruger in the future.

Happy Hunting

Bort I only have one question... if you hunt in north Fla and I assume southern AL then why would you need a rifle for "the snow"??? lmao, just funnin whichya.

In all seriousness the rifle is great, my only complaint with Ruger 77s is the trigger. Other than that they are GREAT rifles and will serve you for years. Personally I would go with something other than a ol Core Lokt but thats your choice.

Good luck,
RA

That is the exact rifle I picked as well. They are great looking and the weather resistance is a huge plus. I went with the 270 simply because I have a 30-06 already and wanted to try something different. Some say the Rugers lack accuracy out of the box, but other than my mini 14 I have not know that to be the case and it sounds like you haven’t either. Good luck and get you a big one.

Never had one in 30-06 but have had them in several other calibers. They were all good rifles. You should get many years of good service from it. Good Hunting.

I have the exact same rifle and also shoot 150 core lokt and also hunt in southern Alabama. Great rifle. I may decide to get some trigger work in the future---but this has been my go to rifle for the last 5 years.

Appreciate the feedback! I spent some time today sighting in my ruger 06 and with about half a box of shells I was chewing up the center of the bullseye. I put a leupold vx1 4-14-40 that I bought for 90$. It seems like a great little scope. The rifle feels like it shoots great. What happens when you get the trigger worked? With a lighter pull does that allow you to hold the gun a little more steady? Thanks

If I could only have one gun it would be a Ruger 77 Mk II all weather in 30-06. I think the scope is a bit over kill though. I would put a Bushnell Elite 3200 in 3-9x40 or Elite 4200 in 2.5-10x40 on it because they let in a lot of light and have the rain guard coating that works very well. I would also use 165gr bullets they are almost as fast and flat as the 150s but they have almost the energy of the 180s.

I hope this helps
