Default Which .270 to buy?????

I am going to buy a .270 but do not know what brand. I want a .270 with a nice scope for under $500. I am looking at the Remington 700 BDL. What do you all think of this gun and what other brands and models are good for a .270???
Thanks

The .270Win. has been a proven performer since around 1935. Few will argue with the fact that most big game can be taken cleanly with a .270Win. Jack O'Connor wrote for years about traveling around the world and successfully hunting with rifles chambered for .270Win. Ammo can be found nearly universally. Several fine factory cartridges are marketed for that round. The options for hand loaders are nearly infinite. That said, the .270Weatherby produces a bit more on the upper end of the .270 bullet's power band and the by many reports, the .270WSM outshines the parent cartridge. So, bottom line, get any of those three and you will likely be happy with the performance. My vote would still go with the old standby, .270Win.
Given your price limit, I like the Winchester Model 70 and the Tikka White Tail Hunter. Others will like different brands. Most any rifle currently chambered for .270Win will get the job done.
The .270Win uses a .277 bullet. It is not by accident that several cartridges use the .284 bullet (7mm). Before you buy, look at all of those cartridges. Many 7mm cartridges offer more versatility then does the .270. Most impressive to me, has been the 7mmWSM. A great cartridge in a short package.

I am farely new to this and am confused about the cartridge thing. Can u explain it for me?? I am probably going to buy either the Remignton 700 BDl, some kind of Winchester, or the Weatherby. What model is the best for the Winchester with my price range?
Thanks

Let me check, Hudee. You have $500 max for both rifle and scope?

Don't know how easy it would be to get both a scope and rifle for that money; certainly I don't see any new Rem BDL's for that price. You may find a Remington 700 ADL in 270 under $500, especially at chain stores. (I'm not knocking chain stores, either.) The advantage to the ADL is that it comes with iron sights, so you could get into shooting while checking out scopes. I haven't seen any new Winchester M70's under 500, but maybe I am looking at the wrong places. Both the ADL and BDL use the strong 700 action.

Good luck.

Have you checked at Academy, Carters Country, or Wal MArt because I am going to check there. Would Academy and Wal Mart's prices be about the cheapest around???? What scope would you recommend for the BDL?

The Savage Package rifle is being discounted for under $500. Comes with Accutrigger, bore sighted 3-9x40 scope and hard case. You would not go wrong with that deal. Three calibers in which this package is offered that I would recommend. 7mmWSM, .270Win and .270WSM. Dunno if WalMart has that Savage package, but I have seen same advertised.
Another way to go, would be to get on GunsAmerica and pick up a used rifle/scope outfit. I recently bought, off GunsAmerica, a Tikka White Tail Hunter in 7mmRemMag, for $230. The rifle appeared un-used and shoots great.
The .270Win is a long action cartridge, meaning that the receiver on the rifle needs to be long enough to feed and eject that long cartridge. The .270WSM with very similar ballistics, comes in a short action rifle. The 7mmWSM, which is ballistically superior to either .270, is also in a short action.
Best bet is go to a retail outlet, where you can handle the rifles. Even if you see what you want on GunsAmerica, go first to a gun store and look at that model before you buy.
If you are not familiar with GunsAmerica, go a simple search on the Net and that site should pop up!

I'm not familiar with Academy, but it is usually very difficult to beat Walmart's prices on new rifles. Before California Walmarts were forced to quit selling guns they would usually have Winchesters, Weatherbys, Rugers and Remingtons for around $400 or so. These were the lower end models with synthetic stocks, which are quite satisfactory for a field gun. Our local sporting goods stores often advertise Savages with scopes for about that price also, and the new Remngton 710 can be had with scope for about that price also. The Remington 710 is a somewhat controversial gun due to many design and manufacturing innovations intended to keep the price down. In other words, there are those who will look down their nose at you if you have one. I am not partial to too much plastic in a gun myself but then that's just my opinion; they're worth a look, then you can make up your own mind.

The suggestion of looking for a used rifle & scope combo is not a bad one at all, however, especially in your price range. You might look around at the used deals before you buy; new rifles will always be available, but if you find a used one that meets your needs you may be very glad that you did.

Just be careful when buying a new rifle to look it over for any obvious flaws. Here's a link to a site you ay find useful, with tips on what to look for in a used rifle. Good luck!
