The Savage Package rifle is being discounted for under $500. Comes with Accutrigger, bore sighted 3-9x40 scope and hard case. You would not go wrong with that deal. Three calibers in which this package is offered that I would recommend. 7mmWSM, .270Win and .270WSM. Dunno if WalMart has that Savage package, but I have seen same advertised.
Another way to go, would be to get on GunsAmerica and pick up a used rifle/scope outfit. I recently bought, off GunsAmerica, a Tikka White Tail Hunter in 7mmRemMag, for $230. The rifle appeared un-used and shoots great.
The .270Win is a long action cartridge, meaning that the receiver on the rifle needs to be long enough to feed and eject that long cartridge. The .270WSM with very similar ballistics, comes in a short action rifle. The 7mmWSM, which is ballistically superior to either .270, is also in a short action.
Best bet is go to a retail outlet, where you can handle the rifles. Even if you see what you want on GunsAmerica, go first to a gun store and look at that model before you buy.
