Used rifles are usually a pretty good deal, but be careful this close to hunting season. Pawnshops especially will try to price gouge. I noticed the used racks at my local shops are looking a bit bare. For your price range it is going to be very hard to beat a Savage pakage rifle. They are tough, reliable and shoot well. You can always change the glass later if it is not to your liking. I still have a scope from a package gun that is sitting on top of a 22 WMR and still going strong.

If I am reading their website correctly, it is a little over $385. Feel free to check it out. You can pull up all their stuff. Don't skip looking at Savage rifles, though. I just have not heard of any problems with them, and many shooters like the new trigger.

Yup. The BDL is pricy for the added looks. Well, I don't think I can come up with a good rifle & glass combo tonite for $500. I see Walmart has the Winchester super shadow is synthetic stock, 270 wsm for a little over $426. Serious screamer, that cartridge is. Doubt you would be dissappointed in it, but that leaves you without sights. I'll ponder....

As frizzellr said, if you have picked out a rifle you can't afford then you better save your pennies.
I'd agree with others in that I'd look for a decent used rifle. Our local shops have a pile of used Ruger 77s and Remington 700s in 270 right now. Best selection I have seen in years. Most are running $350-$450 with a scope. Shop owners have said that guys are trading for the new whizz whammo wsms.

If you want to hunt this year and if you must stick to your stated limit of $500 with scope mounted, then you need to forget the Rem 700BDL! Unless, again as stated, you decide to go with a used firearm/scope combo, at which point the field is wide open when you have $500 burning in your pocket. You have reached an impasse, in terms of getting suggestions, because you return to a rifle that cost beyond your limit, after mounts, rings and scope! Add to that the fact that if you go "cheap" on mounts, rings and scope, you are defeating the purpose of buying a higher quality rifle! Since you've asked, my opinion would be to go cheap on the rifle and get high quality mounts, rings and scope. By doing that, you can stay within your $500 limit. As I see it, there is no other way to meet your price limit and end up with a decent rifle/scope rig! The Savage line has built a great rep for accuracy and serviceability. The ONLY thing that you give up with Savage, is "pretty"! You can buy the low cost Savage model of your choice and still have around $200 left to buy a scope rig. In a fixed power scope, you can come in right at $200 with good steel mounts and rings. OR, buy a "package" rifle rig, which will be mounted with an inexpensive scope rig, and figure on using the inexpensive scope and mounts for a year or two, before moving up to a quality scope and mounts. If, on the other hand, you go with a quality scope, it can be kept, if you later sell the rifle, and moved to the new rifle. So many options, so little time! <8^) Good luck.

I guess I will put in my 2 cents also. As everyone has stated, a 700BDL is out of your price range. I think you will be hard pressed to find a used one for under $400 that is in good shape. I believe someone else stated to get a really good scope and a lower priced rifle. I totally agree. For years I bought lower end scopes and then I finally bit the bullet and tried a Leupold. OMG! What a difference! I would really incourage you to get a rifle like a Savage or a used rifle in good condition and spend the money on your scope. You can find used rifles at GunsAmerica or GunBroker.com. Remember that you will have to factor in shipping, insurance and transfer fees on top of the purchase price. I know Savage has some combo deals and I also saw a Combo from Howa for around $500. The last thing to consider with your $500 maximum is ammo. You will have to buy several different brands of ammo to find which one shoots best from you rifle. You can easily spend another $100 doing this.
As far as calibers go, ammo for the good 'ol .270 can be found almost everywhere and is cheap. The .270 Weatherby is going to very expensive to feed camparitively speaking. The .270WSM is a newer cartridge but is gaining popularity. It outperforms the .270Win and is about even with the Weatherby. You can look at the 7mm's also. Only a slightly larger bullet but much better performance. You can buy heavier grain factory loads and it has better trajectory. The 7mmWSM doesn't really have a performance advantage over the 7mmRem Mag but it is a shorter case and should cycle faster for a follow up shot. A 7mm would be a better choice if you were giong after anything larger than a whitetail.
Try not to have tunnel vision for a 700BDL in .270Win. There are serveral different rifles in different cartridges that will perform very well. If your heart is set on the BDL, save your money this year until you can afford one. Don't skimp on the scope. You will only kick yourself later.

If you go with .270cal, the .270Win will be the least expensive to shoot. You wil have lots of options, in terms of bullet weight and manufacturer to try in your new rifle. But again, like G2 said, if you intend to go after anything bigger then deer, look at the 7mm cartridges.
