I have one that was given to me by a friend. He never could get it to not jam on the first shot. I cleaned it and gave it som TLC and it still jams, and even after a trip to the gunsmith it STILL jams. Could just be a lemon, but I imagine there are better 22's out there.

gopher, don't waste your money, the Viper is trouble!! If you want a Remington, save up and get the 597. If you're not set on a Remington, go with the Ruger 10/22. Its sounds like you're looking for a 22 that you can customize and there's more stuff available for the Ruger than all the others combined.

Only do this if you want to waste good money. I have a 597, and it is junk. You can't even shoot 10 rounds without several jams.

longrifle, I guess I spoke before thinking, but at least I HAVE heard mixed reviews on the 597. I've never heard ANYTHING good about the Viper. I know its not too customizable, but the 552 Speedmaster is just about as good as Rem 22 auto come. just my .02

The speedmaster is a sweet little rifle. Very smooth, accurate, and pretty.

I have owned my Rem 597 for two years now. I haven't shot it in a year and a half. I need to find someone to sell it to, or trade it off. And when I contacted Rem about it, they could have cared less. Just told me to send it in for repairs and they would send me a bill. And it's under warranty. [&:]

Sounds like Remington is trying to put themselves out of business. The newer 700's are not much and sounds like the 597's are too. Thats ashame, they've got a huge following. Hopefully, their shotguns are not going wayard too.
