Fully rifled barrels are for sabot rounds, and also hybrid slug rounds like Lightfields and Brennekes. Just don't shoot rifled slugs.
As for the mounts, I believe you will need rings and bases on that rig. I'm not positive about that though. If the surface of the cantilever rail is tapped, but has no dovetail slots, then you'll need bases, and rings that work with those bases. It's no big deal, they come packaged and labeled for your application. There may be a ring that kind of clamps itself onto the rail. You just need to check it out.
You want a driving gun, so I would go with a low-power scope, or just leave your dad's Simmons on 3x when it's your turn to push.

My brothers 500S I believe it is, anyway, a Mossberg 500 model slugster. His is drilled and tapped to carry a scope. Since you mentioned a drive I would probably use open sights since you never know how close the deer will pass you. I don't know the situation where you hunt, but where I hunt I have had deer run just feet past me and I would prefer the open sight for a shot then.
Good luck

the simmons on 3x will be fine....if taken deer running on 3x....thats no problem.....i cant use open sites unless i mill off the scope mount and then have sites put on....thats a waste.......i have a free scope and all i need is the rings and bases...i dont know that the base is grooved or not....it is cut at an anglethen goes flat under the edge.....theres 5 cut grooves going across the base and one through the center.....no holes though........the slug barrels in cabels say to use weaver style rings i just looked.......does that make sense?? what kind of rings are those? like the 22rings that have the bases and all attached as one piece??thats what i think but im not sure.....thanx guys......if not ill just take it to the gunshop and get hooked up...but if i dont have to go to the gunshop i dont want too.....thanx alot.....

i would take it in to a good gun shop and let them explain and show yuo what you need sounds like you need a set of rings for A 1" SCOPE and then installed the base is integrated into the cantilever of the barrel weaver style rings are fairly common ring type
hope this helps

On the cantilever rail/barrel, Mossberg says it is an integral scope base. To me that means you don't need another base, just rings that work with the integral base. That is good. One less thing to loosen on you.
I do think weaver style rings will work. I have never been real crazy abouth them. I will say they have never failed on me though.

I have many slug guns with the cantilever, 1 being the mossberg 500 this shotgun is a really good firearm. All you need are the rings, but take it to a good gunsmith allow them to mount the scope, and bore sight it. If your going to use it for what you send, then leave the scope on 3 and no more then 4 power. I have great luck using the Lightfield EXP Hybred 2-3/4" slugs.
