Default 35 rem vs 30/30

I have a 35 Marlin that my son killed his first deer with. I have mostly hunted with a 270. I want to get a deer with the 35.

But...at a local gun shop there is a 336 30/30 that is in excellent shape that I can get for under $200.

Would this be practical? Are these two close enuff not to make a difference?

I may get the 30/30 just so I have one in my collection.

Both are superb old time close range deer cartridges and both will handle much bigger game in their respective ranges. I personally see them as equivalent cartridges even though there's quite a difference in caliber.

They have similar range (roughly 100 yards or a little more) similar recoil and are chambered in the same leveraction rifle.......the Marlin 336.

The .35 Remington and the .30-30 Winchester are both superb woods cartridges for the wily whitetail.

In my opinion, the 35 Rem. does do a better job on deer sized game than a 30-30 Win., and given a choise, i'd pick it over a 30-30 every time "if", my shots were 100 yards or less.

I had a friend shat shot one heck of a lot of animials in Alaska with his scoped TC Contender pistol, chambered 35 Rem., includeing Dall sheep, caribou, moose ect... He really liked it, and said it did a great job.

It "isn't" that i don't like a 30-30 Win., it's just that the 35 Rem. seems to do a better job..

For deer out to 150 yards you would not see much difference in the performance. However on Game bigger than deer the 35 Remington is quite a bit more gun. Bullets up to 200-225 grain are available for the 35 Rem. Its a good woods gun at short ranges for any North American Game and I have seen many Moose fall to the old 35 Rem. I whacked one with a 35 Remington Contender. Also Elk and Black Bear.

My deer rifle is a 336 30-30. It is a nice little gun. If I am looking for deer or hogs, it is my go to gun. Everything that I have been able to hit has died immediately. I shot a deer terribly high with it, but that deer just dropped dead. And I am not ashamed to say it was all done with the cheapest ammo money can buy.

I would buy that 30-30 deffinately, under 200 dollars is a super deal. In the real world and when it comes to killing a deer there really is no difference in killing performance between a 30-30 and 35 rem. Based on the fact that 30-30 is more popular and a easier to find caliber I would have to say I would take the 30-30 over a 35 remington any day.

I know a few old time hunters that used the 35 rem on deer/bear in the northeast and they would laugh if someone told them the 30/30 was even close in killing power.

Well, you said you want to kill a deer with a 35, and you can't do that with a 30/30.

Get both.

oldelkhunter,

EXACTLY, and i based my last post mostly on the fact that we had a 30-30 and a 35 on the farm at the same time. We shot deer with both, and the 35 Rem out performs the 30-30 hands down!!!

I don't care what it says in the books about them being equil, i'm talking about actual use, and my dad shot so many deer with a 35 Rem. you wouldn'r even believe it! It didn't take long for him to figure out to grab the 35 instead of the 30-30.. For many years venison and small game was the only meat we had, and dad easily picked the 35 over the 30-30.

When i got about 13 or so, dad sat me in a berry patch that bears were feeding heavily in, and handed me the 35 Rem., NOT the 30-30, that should tell you something right there.
