Having owned both I couldn't agree more with oldelkhunter and DM. I now own 2 35s and 0 30-30s.

I know the .35 is a fine cartridge, but unless deer (whitetail I assume) grow thicker skin I don't see how they would die any quicker than when shot with a 30-30.

A 336 in "excellent shape" for under $200.00 is a very good deal.

I bought the 35 for $100 from a freind who never used it.

DM- i agree. i have seen what a 30-30 dose to deer and i have seen what a 35 rem dose. i don't care what the books say i would take the 35 out and watch it preform it's magic. really it is hard to explan however if you ever saw deer shot with a 30-30 and then a 35 rem..... well lets say the choice would be a lot harder...... what gun to get that is chambered for the 35.

i shot several deer with a 35 and have seen dozens killed with the 30-30.....i have noticed that deer hit with the 30-30 run about 10-50 yards as if not being hit and then fall over dead.....when the 35 barks you see the impacted and you see the deer fall to the ground as if it were hit with thore's hammer.


anyone that has seen what a 35 will do compared to the 30-30 such as DM knows what i am talking about

I haven't killed a deer with a .35 Rem, but I have killed them with a 30-30, .270, and a .50 cal muzzleloader with a 460gr. conicle.

With all three, I expect a deer to run the 10-50 yds. before they realize they are dead, although I have had 2 dear die on the spot with the 30-30, and one with the .270. I have shot most of my dear with the Marlin 30-30.

Last year I shot a young buck right behind the shoulder with my .50 cal hawken with the .460 gr. slug at about 8 steps away. Not even 10 yards. He ran the usual 35-40 yds. before he died. Although I have experienced the dead on the spot shot, I wouldn't bet money on it with any gun. Maybe the .35 is the magic number.

I've shot deer with both calibers and they both killed the deer I have shot some dropped dead on the spot others ran about 30-40 yards all I'm saying is they both kill deer the same. Now if I was talkin about bear hunting yeah I would choose the 35 rem for one obvious reason alone it comes in a 200 grain loading. If you were bear hunting and had the choice of a larger caliber but chose the smaller one I think you would be quite stupid.

I also wanted to add I have dropped 2 deer in there tracks with a 223 rem both head shots one at about 25 yards the other at about 50 yards. when it comes to killing deer its all about shot placement. Besides it really doesn't take much to kill a deer I have talked to some old timers that hunted deer with a 22 rimfire back during the depression they said aslong as you double lung'em or shoot them in the head at close range a 22 will do the trick. Asfar as a 35 rem or 30-30 win they tend to exit the animal so in otherwords you never actually see either bullets full potential when shooting a deer. besides when a deer is shot with any caliber for that matter they cant tell the difference between two different bullets all they know is something is wrong then they die, I'm sure if one of you was shot with a 30-30 or 35 rem you wouldnt know the difference either other then you've been shot and now you're dying. Do you see my point?

I guess this is a moot point as blindhunter may have already bought the 30-30 (very good price by the way). but my experience has been 100% opposite of that of HighDesertWolf. I would say that 40-50% of the time the bullet from my 30-30 never exited the deer and they always ran. Blood trails were spotty to non existent. Yes, the deer was dead but oftentimes in the thick cover that I hunt in here in northern Maine there was a nervous period of time looking for that animal.

I have shot a like number of deer with the 35 (actually several more). In my case, the 200 grain bullet from the 35 has always exited and if the animal moves anywhere it seems to stagger 5-10 yards like a drunk sailor and plops over. Also, there seems to be a better blood trail. I don't honestly know if it has to do with the 200 grain bullet as oppsed to the 170 but the 35 seems to shock the deer better and, for lack of a better term, it pounds them.

I don't reload so I'm stuck with factory fodder. Like I said, I owned both in the past but only the 35 now.

Hog, if you have the .35, why would you want a .30/30? Just for fun, to have another gun?? OK then! A .30/30 will kill a deer. People I know who have used both tell me the .35 is a little better killer of all kinds of game than a .30/30. But not a whole lot better.

Wider, heavier bullets have their own special way of delivering the goods.
