Browning BLR in 30-.06 - good idea?
I'm interested in a new 30-.06 or .270 and was considering this gun. My two favorite rifles to hunt with are my model 94 in 32 spec and 336 in 35 rem. I need something I could take out west for mulies and antelope, up in the mountains for elk, or maybe even give the old guns a rest during deer season at home. I have considered a bolt action, and am not crazy about semi-autos or pumps.
How would this particular gun in either caliber stack up as far as hunting accuracy and efficient knock down power for the roles mentioned above?
Thanks in advance for any thoughts,
Bill

Personally, I don't like the looks of the BLRs, but I understand they are fine guns. I prefer bolt actions myself, but I do have a soft spot for my Marlin 30-30. Of both of the rounds you mentioned, I would probably pick the '06. The 270 is great, but it sounds like you want something that will be a "do it all" gun. I think that the 30-06 fits the bill a little better.

After doing my research, I went to buy a BLR in 243 about 2 weeks ago. I think it is a great all-around gun. After getting to the store, I saw that he had a used BLR in 308 for $320...gun looked new (99%), and I couldn't pass on this. It is quickly becoming my favorite rifle. It is essentially a bolt action that cycles on a lever. Either of the two you mentioned will do great, but the 30-06 may be a little better for elk.

I'm a bolt man myself and love the '06. I'm not saying this is true but I heard that the long action calibres can jam in the magazine. The .308 can do pretty much anything a '06 can except in short action. Just my thoughts

If I were you, I'd go to the store and check the feel of it. I have a BLR in .358 Winchester, but the only long action I ever "hefted" didn't have the nice compact feel of the long action.
My recommendation would be to get a short action in either .308 or .358, but that's my own personal preference. Either of these cartridges have energy levels similar to the 30-06, and can do a good job on whatever you may want to hunt.
30-06 is a great cartridge, I've shot a lot of deer and moose with that chambering.
