If I were you, I'd go to the store and check the feel of it. I have a BLR in .358 Winchester, but the only long action I ever "hefted" didn't have the nice compact feel of the long action.

My recommendation would be to get a short action in either .308 or .358, but that's my own personal preference. Either of these cartridges have energy levels similar to the 30-06, and can do a good job on whatever you may want to hunt.

30-06 is a great cartridge, I've shot a lot of deer and moose with that chambering.
