RE: stubblejumper ...........
I prefer the 300 win mag, it has enough power for just about anything, and rifles and ammo are readily available... Almost everyone chambers a rifle for it and every ammo manufacture makes ammo for it, and you can get ammo anywhere for it.

bigbulls is right.
#1 - Do you plan on takiing a shot at an elk or moose at or beyond 500 yards? No, Most of my Elk will be with in 100-300 yards. But it would be nice to take a shot if it was at 400 yards.
#2 - Do or will you practice enough to take advantage of the added energy, Velocity, and recoil of a cartrige like a 300 ultra? What do you mean? I would try to practice at least 1-2 times a month. Or whenever I had time.
I am only 12 but I shoot a 7mm. The kick dont bother me a bit. I am not afraid of Kick.

RE: Which 300
From those answers my opinion would be that the 300 winchester or 300 WSM would be right up your alley. Either one of these two would be more than enough gun for elk and moose to 500 yards. Granted the trajectory is not as flat as the ultra mag but once you get past about 300 yards you will have to compensate for bullet drop with both any way. The difference between the ultra mag and the regular mag is only about 2.5 - 3 inches at 400 yards shooting 180 grain bullets.
By practice enough to use the ultra mags extended range I mean it takes a lot of time at the range, and not just sitting at the bench, to be able to consistantly hit a target at more than 400 yards. Shooting at a hundred yards every day will not cut it either. You would need to shoot at 400 and 500 yards to know your bullets trajectory and know how much to compensate for bullet drop and wind. IMO, a lot more than a couple times a month. If you are not able to put in this kind of time and effort then you will never realize the ultra mags real performance potential and IMO would be a waste of money.
The cost of the win mags ammo is also about half that of the ultra mag so you can afford to shoot more with the win mag.
Just a note on recoil........ the ultra mag is no light weight. A 7mm rem mag has about 19 foot pounds of recoil energy where as a 300 ultra mag has about 32 foot pounds of recoil energy. It is very good to see a 12 year old that likes the kick of a gun but I would caution you to shoot an ultra mag first before you decide to plop down your parents money. 32 foot pounds is quite substantial for many adults.
To be perfectly honest with you a 7mm Rem mag has plenty of oomph at 400 yards for the largest of elk and moose so you already have plenty of gun. However I would never stop any one from having another rifle to shoot.
Good luch with what ever you decide.

RE: Which 300
I pretty much think it's a mute point. Under field conditions there are probably only 1 or 2 hunters out of a thousand capable of taking a shoot beyound 300 yards. Next time you're at the range ,run 50 yards and pick up your rifle and shoot a 4 inch group or less at 300 yards ,I'll even let you use a post like you would a tree.
IMHO with close to 40 year experience hunting shooting at deer sized game beyond 400 yards ,300 for elk and moose, is irresponsible ,there are just to many variables that come into play. I really think gun manufactuors do hunting a disservice by fostering thier 500 yard comparison B.S. when 99.99% of those out there can't shoot well enough to do it.

7.62X63MM IS GREAT
I match every month here in arizona in the (obsolete bolt action) class which is any military bolt action.. i shoot at targets at 200,300 and 5oo yards... with practice you also
can hit targets the size of a coyote at 5oo yards.. i do it every month with a 100 year old rifle model.......do i suggest making a 5oo yard shot at elk on public land....(NO).
good luck guys...choose wisely because a box of 15.00 30.06 bullets will do the same thang that a 30.00 dollar box of 300 mag bullets will do at 300 yards and that is (BRING AN ELK DOWN).............

Glock29rd.
I really hope you are not trying to compare the 300 Ultra to the 30-06. Becouse of the ballistics.
The 300 Ultras is a very nice long range cal. but at short ranges you should prob. stick with something a bit milder like the 30-06 or the 7mm Mag or even the 300 Win. mag.
Many people feel that the 7mm Mag and the 300 Win. Mag are pretty equil in stature. (in vel. and preformance.) So if you already have the 7mm Mag. why qould you opt. for the 300's.?

We've seen two model 70's in .300 wsm this week that will not properly chamber a cartridge. Were still trying to figure that out.
