RE: I need a .270, which one should I get
Check out the Rem Model 7 in a .260. I picked one up for my boys to use. Was lucky enough to have it ported and some trigger work done. A great gun.
I like it better than my .270 Rem. Now I want to get my .270 done the same way.

You should be able to pik up a 700 Remington ADL Synthetic for about 400-424.00. I think you can shorten the stock a little on these. Last week at Scheels in Fargo ND they were selling new Savage 111 rifles new for 299.00 in 270 and 30-06. I wish I would have been in the market for one.

I am grateful for all the advice. Is the .308 and 7mm-08 going to be less recoil than the .270?
I have not heard of the Howa rifle before. What about a Tikka?

Howa rifles are very well made rifles with more and better features than most of the other big name manufacturers for less money too.
Some of the features of a Howa are:
machined one piece bolt
machined flat bottom receiver with large recoil lug
M-16 style extractor
Adjustable trigger

I think that I have narrowed my search down to a 7mm_08. But how hard is it to find ammo? It sounds like I need to take a serious look at Tikka, Howa and Savage. And if I can find a used Remington. I still haven't heard if they make a youth model. How much would a gun smith charge to chop the stock??????????

There is only a couple of foot-lbs difference between the .270 and the 30-06, I would not recommend either for a young shooter or an un-prepared woman. My wife shoots my .270 sometimes, she is a good-sized woman and she does not like the "kick" of the 270 w/130 gr factory stuff.
The 7mm-08 is in the same range of recoil as the 7 x 57mm, which is considerd a good youth/woman's cartridge and has been killing good sized game and small for 101 years.
The 7mm-08 ammo can be found online from many different sources, I get some from "Cheaperthandirt.com" and "MidwayUSA.com." There are many others...
The Howa Youth is available at WallyWorld for $388, I believe...check it out. But, I think it is only available there in .243 and .308! Good gunsmith near me will cut down a stock and install new recoil pad for $85. That is all I can give you as a start.
Just checked the WW website and downloaded the Adobe PDF file of the Guns Catalog, the Savage youth rifle is available in 7mm-08, SV10GYMXP7mm-08, for $390 + taxes. The Winchester Model 70 Compact is also available in 7mm-08 for about $550. Good luck!

Benouthuntin,
I think you are making a good choice with the 7mm-08. Finding ammo for a 7mm-08 is very easy, every well stocked gunstor will carry it. I believe Wall-mart has it too. I think Tikkas are out of the price range you mentioned. I would stick with the Howa or Savage. If you go with Remington I would look for a M7 or a M700 Mtn rifle. Get one with a wood stock if you plan on having it altered to fit the shooter.
Aim Straight,
NBH

I shoot the Winchester Model 70 270 and it doen't kick at all. Might be a little more pricy tho. Theirs also a feather weight. Any way I love the gun and recommend it.

Wally world has both model 70 and Rem 700 ADL. Caliber depends on the store I guess. The ones around here in Fayetteville, NC have Win M70 Super Shadow packages for just under $400. But you can't beat a Savage Package. One word: Accu-trigger. I'm a Remington guy - but if I found a good Savage used, I'd snap it up in a heartbeat.
As far caliber for wife/daughter. It depends on their size. My wife has no problem with the recoil of 30-06 or 270, but she's taller than average.

After shooting my frined's new Savage 111F with the Accu-trigger this past weekend, I'd say get a Savage. The metal work isn't the prettiest, nor is the stock. But for reliability and accuracy, its a pretty good bargain for the buck.
I wouldn't get the "package" deal though. I don't think the scope is too good a quality. I think its a cheap Simmons. (Simmons makes a pretty good scope but I sort of frown on the real cheapies - my opinion only)
