RE: I need a .270, which one should I get
There is only a couple of foot-lbs difference between the .270 and the 30-06, I would not recommend either for a young shooter or an un-prepared woman. My wife shoots my .270 sometimes, she is a good-sized woman and she does not like the "kick" of the 270 w/130 gr factory stuff.
The 7mm-08 is in the same range of recoil as the 7 x 57mm, which is considerd a good youth/woman's cartridge and has been killing good sized game and small for 101 years.
The 7mm-08 ammo can be found online from many different sources, I get some from "Cheaperthandirt.com" and "MidwayUSA.com." There are many others...
The Howa Youth is available at WallyWorld for $388, I believe...check it out. But, I think it is only available there in .243 and .308! Good gunsmith near me will cut down a stock and install new recoil pad for $85. That is all I can give you as a start.
Just checked the WW website and downloaded the Adobe PDF file of the Guns Catalog, the Savage youth rifle is available in 7mm-08, SV10GYMXP7mm-08, for $390 + taxes. The Winchester Model 70 Compact is also available in 7mm-08 for about $550. Good luck!
