Default 300 Win Mag Bullets

Been shooting the 300 Win Mag for deer since the early 80's and I am happy with the way it shoots. However, it can mess a lot of meat up if hit anywhere other than the head or neck. I have shot mostly 180 gr Federals and a few Winchesters with the same results. Is there such a thing as a commercially available bullet for this gun that does mess stuff up quite so bad. Thanks

What about a solid copper bullet? Try Hornady Full Boar loaded with the GMX or Barnes VOR-TX loaded with the TTSX bullets.

Red, the MV generated by the 300 winny is the culprit, nothing is as hard on bullets as a high velocity impact, and nothing is as hard on meat as a high velocity impact. if every animal you killed was beyond 300 yards the problem wouldn't exist, only solution is slow the bullet down, or make the bullet so heavy it can't drive it fast. its what happens when you use an elk/moose capable cartridge on deer, The prescription I would write for you is a new 7mm/08.

Not every animal is broadside but if it is then stop shooting them through the shoulders. There's plenty of lung behind the shoulder blade. Never understood that shot and not wanting to waste meat. I just don't get it.

A shoulder shot drops them... I use a high shoulder shot when I hunt thick stuff to try to avoid tracking. It does ruin meat though. As Blackelk said, avoid the shoulder and punch a hole through the lungs will save some meat.

If all you're hunting is deer... maybe look into something different. As RR mentioned... the 7mm-08 may be the "perfect" whitetail cartridge. But there's lots of good options from the .243 all the way up to slower heavier .30 cals that would give you plenty of performance on whitetail.

I load up some 220grains in my .30-06. Just to play around and entertain myself. I don't have a chrono so I don't know how fast they're running, but they hit like a hammer and seem to do less damage than my 165 and 150s.

You could try that I suppose. But the point of the .300win mag is to push a .30cal bullet faster than other .30s...

Blackelk, I don't think you read what I said. I try to shoot everything in the head or neck. I have in the past shot them behind the shoulder but it messes up meat on the shoulder with blood and nasty crap. The shoulders don't deliver but a couple pounds of meat according to the guy who processes most of my deer but it's a mess. I am not a "ballistics specialist" hence my asking the question of gun folks to see if there is a bullet for the gun to do less damage. I'm too old to be buying a new deer gun at 70 but I could go back to my old Winchester 30-30.

Red do you hand load?
if so slow the bullet down, if you ever shot a deer at 500 yards with that rifle, you would get the same results as you would at 100 with your 30-30. a controlled expansion bullet help. hold middle ways 4" behind the pocket tight behind the shoulder, you'll hit back third of the lungs, take out the liver, will be a short tracking job if any, and all you'll lose is a bit of rib meat, you'll get about 5 pounds of ground meat off of each shoulder on a 120-130 deer. don't care much for head/neck shots they don't bleed out and are a mess to clean up.

Shoot a tougher bullet with higher weight retention;

barnes TSX, swift A Frame, accubond? scirocco?

possibly shoot heavier bullet, 200grs vs. 165/180.

The guy has stated he is 70, the 300 winny is no slouch and can be borderline brutal as far as recoil with a 200 gr bullet, my feelings are go with a good tough bullet around 165 gr. and shoot at the rib cage till they get beyond 150-200 yards. that's what I do with my big 7's (an stw and a 7mm allen) they are both way faster than the 300 winny.
I have never lost a deer holding middle of the ribcage no matter what the distance, the closest I ever shot one with my 7mm AM is 307 yards, blowed the bejesus out of a couple with the stw till I figured it out I like accubonds but to each his own.
