That low cover is called Black Spruce, You get into it, you might not get out. That is the toughest stuff I ever seen. Of course we try to get close. Every situation is different. If possible and the wind is blowing in the right direction, we will try to sneak around the hill and come up on top of them. Rarely works out. I have seen Maine Moose, and they don't seem near as skidish as these Newfie moose. I have been winded 300 yards away.

Now last year, all the guys in my camp got shots closer than 150 yards. Just the luck of the draw. And all tagged out first two days. But sticking to tradition, I hunted all 6 days. Still didn't take anything bigger than they did. I am going to start doing research on Western Canada. Believe me, I don't like all that bog land. Every year, I sprain an ankle, or pull my hip.

Stubble, any direction to start looking. I have been loyal to these guys and they give me special breaks and consider them friends, but am serious about western canada. I got a friend in Red Deer I think, near Edmonton. He said he has moose, but doesn't see them often. He is more of a elk hunter.

Moose hunting in Saskatchewan is all about finding water and meadows situated in the forest, with these locations you have found their favorite foods "willows and water plants". While moose do live in forest fringe areas hunting them here requires luck or good ole fashion pushing bush...not what I call exciting moose hunting. However for a non resident through an outfitter you'll be situated in the far north where hunting will be swamps, lakes, etc. Access is fair as many looging roads to use in most areas but a quad, winch, chainsaw and trailer is an absolute must. I have seen many topping 40" but 50" is where you want to be and in that sense I have seen very few either on the hoof or on the ground in Saskatchewan. If I wanted truly big Canadian Moose Northern BC would be the place I would consider.

I have been drawn FINALLY and am looking forward to going way back in search of the "Twig Eater". The area in which I was drawn I don't expect quality to be extremely high but then again it isn't my main focus either. Call some moose, have some close encounters, no hassles, scenery and come back with a freezer full of meat...I'll be tickled, big horns would be a bonus.

Anyone that is really serious about a canada moose should look to northern B.C..I have hunted the area a couple of times and I saw several mature bulls each day on a ten day hunt.I hunted in the prophet muskwa area.Be warned though that the prices are not cheap.

Thanks for the info. I pay a flat rate of 2500 US for Newfie hunting since I go alot. I bet your Northern BC would be 5K US. But sounds like it would be worth it.

Next time you go to Newfie BC tell the outfitter you want to hunt around Gander Int'l airport that's where all the moose are.

You may be right oldelk. I have yet to travel south of Deer Lake. Every time I am getting ready to leave and looking around at the horns at the airport, I see maybe one trophy >40" for every 20 hunters. Alot of people believe you go up there and instant trophy. Check out this one I saw once that was not in my area on the side of the road. All I could do is snap pictures. Biggest one I ever saw up there.

BC when I was coming back from Europe last go around we had to land at that airport because of "malfunctions"...make a long story short we had to circle because a moose was on the runway and when we finally approached for the landing every pond around that airport had a danged moose in it or around it. You need to go to BC or Alaska for a Biggun though. Come to think of it I need to go there myself being it will probably take 100 years to draw a Shiras permit in the lower 48 . Next year I will apply to Maine,NH and Vermont for a tag also.

I have been applying to Maine for the past 5 years. You build up this point system. More years you apply, the better shot you have. Its free money for Maine. But I keep trying.

I have used the 416 Rem Mag, 300 Win Mag, 30-06 and the little 6.5 Swedish Mauser. All were one shot kills. I quess I would stay with the 30-06 with 180 grain Partitions. I have seen nothing work any better.
