I am gonna start one of those debates that gets evryone going. I hunt in Ontario Canada I primarly hunt moose but also Deer and bear. I was wondering which calibre you would all suggest? I was thinking .300 rum but I heard to avoid it if you don' t handload (which I don' t) so what do you guys think??

Moose in Ontario ...we are talking 1000 lb animal with less fight than a big bull elk...anything from a 270 up would do the trick... 300 ultramag would be great for a long distance shooter but would you have any shots that long in Ontario?

We hunt a lake and actually have some shots that can be long 400 yards+ not that I would take one that long the longest I would shoot is 250-300. I am currently hunting with a 30-06 I like the calibre but have had some bad luck with the gun I have. just looking for suggestions

In my mind, the ideal moose rifle is a .35 Whelen. Good substitutes include the .338 cals and the .375 H&H. You can certainly kill moose with a .270 or .30-06 but you' d not buy those guns specifically for that purpose.
If you already own a .30-06, buy some 180-200 grain premium ammo from Federal and go Moose hunting....you have enough gun right now.

Ideal moose gun is 35 Whelen? I don' t think so Vapordog. Shots can be very long. And you rarely get a pass thru even with a 300RUM from 250 yards. Moose seem to have uncanny smell compared to a whitetail. I was 150 yards away from this cow and as soon as we topped the mountain, she got wind of us from that far. Enen though it wasn' t blowing directly in her face. The wind howls so bad in Newfoundland, that she didn' t hear us.
Believe it or not, my guide hunts with a 243Win 7600 pump. He always gets his moose. He just shoots under 300 yards and waits for it to die. As he said, we got all day.

Syd1981-There is no need for a bullet heavier than 175gr in the 7mm bore.I have taken several moose and elk with 140gr partitions.I have several friends using their 7mmremmags for moose and elk and all use bullets from 140gr to 160gr.
