Get the 30-06. If you are worried about trajectory put some 125gr bullets in it and let it fly........
The only problem is that those 125gr bullets have a fairly low BC,so they lose velocity rapidly, and at longer ranges, the trajectory isn't all that impressive.

True, but how many people shoot at whitetail deer beyond 400 yards?

.......that's 1.
No seriously I understand your point, and you are right, but the majority of people no matter what they tell you still only shoot around 100 yards.

If you load the 100gr ballistic tip in the 25-06,and the 125gr ballistic tip in the 30-06,and sight in both for 200 yards, the 25-06 drops less at 300 yards, and the difference keeps increasing as the range increases.
For a deer only gun,I see no reason at all to use any .308" bullet in any cartridge,as the 25-06 has more than enough power for any deer, even at 500 yards.

The .25-06 will handle any deer anytime. Why put up with extra recoil? You will likely be more accurate with a lighter kicking rifle or you can opt for a lighter weight rifle and it will still be comfortable to shoot. As for bullet choice there is more than enough. You can go from 100 gr Barnes to 120 grain Partitions and all are excellent on deer sized game. I chose the .25-06 in Tikka T3 Stainless/Syn myself.

If we are going to use that argument then why not just use the .243 with 100gr bullets? Or we could always just step up to a 150gr with the 30-06....the difference in drop at 500 yards is going to be somewhere around 2".
Again, the majority of people no matter what they tell you still only shoot around 100 yards so in the grand scheme it doesn't matter too much.

Why pay $20-$40 for a 50 round box of 25 caliber premium bullets when you can buy 100-30 caliber bullets for $20?? The premium 25 caliber bullets are considerably more expensive than the standard 30 caliber hunting bullet, and the 30 caliber hunting bullet in 165 or 180 grain will do a better job?? Makes no sense to me. But if you want to pay 3 or 4 times more for your bullets then that is your choice.

And are you guys saying that a 100 grain 25-06 bullet is as effective at 400 yards as a 165 grain 30 caliber Siera Gamer King?? I certainly hope you are not trying to imply that. Tom.

Premium bullets are simply not required for deer.Where I live,I can buy 100 Hornady .257" interlock bullets for less than a 100 Hornady interlocks in .308".

and the 30 caliber hunting bullet in 165 or 180 grain will do a better job??
The 100gr interlocks will kill deer just as dead as 165gr or 180gr .308" bullets.Dead is dead.

The thread is dealing with deer hunting.I have killed deer at well over 400 yards with .257" bullets, and they do a great job.
If .308" bullets can provide clean kills on elk and moose at 400 yards, the .257" bullets are plenty for much smaller bodied deer.

Just how many deer have you personally killed with .257" bullets to make such statements?

Why are you attacking my post?? I did not recommend the premium bullets for the 257, some one else brought it up. However I did not feel the need to attack their specific post, I only pointed out the cost difference in the bullets??

As far as howmany deer have I shot with a 25 caliber(personally), I would guess that number to be about 15-20. I have owned 2 differnt 257 WBY's, and1 25-06, and I will never sell my 257 Roberts. I considermyself knowledgeable with the quarter bore.

I have chased several deer around the hill with the 25 caliber bullets. I rarely have to chase one with30 caliber bullets. If you can not understand how a larger diameter and heavier bullet would put a deer down faster, then it would be impossible for me to explain it to you.

I have said this before and I will say it again. The quarter bore is too small for the big stuff, and toobig for the small stuff. But that is just my opinion. And all I did was state my opininon. I did not personally attack yours, so why would you personally atack mine?? Tom.
