New to gun hunting and want to do it right the first time. Just got my first rifle (Savage 111 bolt action 30.06) Looking forward to many memories in the field. When it comes to ammo, this has been a debate with everyone I ask as I realize there will be varables and of course personal opinion. I am looking for rifleman's experience:
I have research and inquired about the Hornady 150gr SST for deer and pigs. Plain and simple question:is this a good choice? Looks great on paper and the local pro shop highly recommeds it, what do YOU think. Thanks everyone.

I shoot hornady customs in a couple of my rifles but that is because the rifles like them (dont get me wrong they do the job every time). I would suggest trying a couple different rounds in your new rifle and you will find that the rifle will like a certain load better than the other, at least that is what I have found to be true with store bought loads...Best of luck to you !!!!

I would personally not go with the sst on hogs. I have shot about 20 deer with them, and several times I have not gotten the penetatation I like. I think the hornady spirepoint is a better comparison

I use the 150gr SST's in my 30-06 for both deer and hogs, and they have always hit hard and left a good exit hole.
You are just going to have to grab a box and see how well they shoot for you.
