Default 300 RCM---338 RCM

What are your opinions on these. here's mine.
What was the purpose of making these RCM's (Ruger Compact Magnums) winchester has the WSM line of calibers, remington has the SARUM line of calibers, and nowhornady/ruger come up with this RCM, Hello we all ready have short action magnums no body want's some more Short action magnums. Some people dont even perfer the WSM and SARUM and nowRuger/Hornady have to copy Winchester and remington's short action calibers. thats just my 2 cents. I would like to here everyone else's

How many rifles do you own that are chambered for some kind of 30 caliber cartridge?

There must be enough people that are buying them up. If they were a flop they wouldn't be selling the way they are.

When the Winchester and Weatherby magnums were introduced we also already had belted magnums but that didn't stop them either. You could go back a hundred years and you wouldn't be able to count the redundancy in cartridges. Some survived and some didn't.

When Honda introduced their cars we already had Toyota. When Chevy was founded we already had Ford. So on and so on. I guess I really don't see your point.

The point in them is that they give the same performance as the 300 and 338 out of a 20" barrel. So if you want a lighter mountain rifle you don't have to sacrifice bullet velocity and energy in order to have a shorter overall length to your rifle.

I think part of if is a sales gimmick.. The WSM and RCM seem to be a new trend (which I like, the shorter Mag rounds) But there is some use to the rounds.. But My guess is partly "The next big thing" that "someone has to get" and it will take a few years and they will settle on a couple that reach popularity.. My guess is the 300 WSM will proably stick.

I agree, we already have the .300 wsm, the clear winner, the SAUM's are dead! , =The .338 RCM does fill one gap.....since the .325wsm is an 8mm WSM......323.....they didn't make a .338WSM.....so they could snatch some biz by having essentially a .338 WSM....i know guys wanted to see a.338 wsm but they just couldn't make it work or somthing, so I see the .338 RCM maybe doing well, or at least has a chance/fills a gap. the .300 RCM though, i agree, why? if anythign I'd of relased the .338 RCM and if it was a succes maybe then....but I think many guys won't look past a 300 mag, 338+ is just too big/huge too many minds....

I'm a tad surprised they didn't make a .338 Ruger....ie the .375 ruger necked to .338? but the .338 RUM already exists, though I believe it is longer than the ruger.....nto certain though. or even a .300 Ruger.....take a bite out of the .300 RUM sales.....and .338 RUM sales....

.416 Ruger is what we need more than anything! There is an absolute gap in the .416 market....that could be filled and dominated, the ruger is the perfect case. There's the .416rigby and .416remington, and many say the .416 rigby will be the only one of the 2 in 15years, and a .416 ruger would be better than both of these! I know not many 416's are probably sold, but for a guy thinking about a .375H&H for africa, a .416 ruger could take a big bite from that market too. If ruger does end up making it....please offer it the rifle like the .458 lotts offered, ie something nice....

Why does it matter?

If you don't want one, then don't buy one. A manufacturer has the right to venture on with market ventures....flop or not.

I think its like politics, we wonder, what were they thinking? haha. I don't get either at times. I think we all just wish we ran the show at times.

I'd love a .416 Ruger, but unless its produced I don't plan to build a wildcat of one.

Also I think when manufacturers all build the same thing, it could lead to a combined failure, vs. 1 taking the lead and the rest falling by the wayside. That's why taking a chance on a newer round is just that a chance, just think about how many great rounds failed.... I do think some rounds are better and fail for whatever reason, and with that being the case IMO it's better to give up a little something to have a rifle/cartridge that will be around forever.

I think cartridges are one exception to the " build a better mousetrap...." phrase.
