Frizzler, you knowledge is obviously limited so i will fill you in. It is perfect for small game and varmints, crow, groundhog, ground squirrels, fox ect ect. Not to mention it is more accurate than any of your deer rifles at 100yds.

3030win, actually my knowledge isn' t that limited on this subject. More accurate than my deer rifles? When was the last time you shot my deer rifles? I don' t remember ever inviting you to go to the range with me. Perfect for small game? Well so was the 5mm Rem Mag and where is it? The 17 HMR is and always will be just what I said it was. A souped up pellet gun. If you already have a 22 WMR then you already have the best small game cartridge there is.

Because you can' t reload the damn things. NO non-reloadable cartridge holds any interest for ME, or many other RIFLEMEN!!

I hope the 17 HMR doesn' t become another 5mm Remington. You' ll be holding a rifle with no ammuntion available. I haven' t shot one or been around one being shot.If you read the reviews(which you can' t believe)they are tack drivers. My dealer was paid a visit from a Ruger Rep several months ago.Ruger was very impressed with the tight groups they were getting at 200 yards.I can' t remember exactly what they claimed ,but if it was true it would be impressive.I' ve thrown around the idea of getting one. Until I see they are here to stay,I' ll stick with 22mag.

3030 win, do you think this thing would work on turkeys? .22 is probably better right?

Same reason why I had resevations about getting one. I might think about using one though as a varmint round in areas where over penetration might be a factor; if it survives as a manufactured gun and caliber.

3030,
You say its perfect for small game. What kind of damage does it do on impact? If it blows things up it kind of becomes a varmint round unless you don' t eat your small game and then why would you kill it anyways. Not being critical just asking as I would not mind one but if it blows rabbits to jello then it would not do what I want of it.
As one reply to those who are putting the round down. One It ain' t a " suped up pellet gun " any more than a .22WMR is; just besause they also make .22cal pellet guns too.
And what makes this round unworthy of a being owned by a " RIFLEMAN" just becaise it is a rimfire and not reloadable? That would put the .22lr, which I consider one of the rifleman' s off season/indoor practice rounds in the same category.

Heck, I don' t know why I' m defending a caliber I have not owned or shot yet.
But I' ll just state that just because I don' t see a need for myself owning say either a .22/250 or a .458Win.Mag. dose not mean they don' t have a purpose for existing.

How many guns were made for the 5mm Rem? How many companies made ammo for it? There are over 25 guns now in the 17 HMR and 3 companies making ammo for it. It wont be another 5mm.

And it is perfect for praticing, buy a gun that is like your deer rifle. And you can pratice shooting at 100+yds with cheaper ammo than your deer rifle. And I have seen the Rugers shoot 1/4 MOA groups. Pretty good for a souped up pellet gun.

The little bullet is powerful, so take head shots on rabbits and squirrels. Which because of it' s superior accuracy over a 22lr or mag, is no hard task.

eldeguello how can you forsake all rimfires? everbody needs a .22lr. though thats all i need in a rimfire. because if i was going to need a 22mag id simply cast some .225cal bullets for a .223 (or any 22cal rifle) and load them to 22mag velocity and still be cheaper.
and yes tim that cheap. i started reloading to cut down costs and then i started casting bullets to further drop the cost. i now shoot 38spls for exactly 99cents for a box of 50. so yeah im cheap, but im also a college student with no money, so maybe someday when i have money i will get one but i doubt it

What' s nice about the 17hmr is that it is a legit 150 yard round that is more accurate than a 22mag and make about the same noise as a 22lr.
The 5mmRem mag fit the same niche but .....
It' s nice to have such a round available to use on dairy farms and in areas where houses are encroaching and people get bent out of shape hearing loud gun shots.
It has it' s place and hope to see it around for a long time and not go the way of the 5mm
