Questions/Opinion for Beginner.

I got a question that I'd like your opinions on. Before I ask, let me just give you a little background. I was never much of a gun person, but am starting to get a real interest in it. I own guns, but don't use them much. Usually my choice of weapons for hunting is with a bow. However, I do shotgun hunt for deer maybe once or twice every two or three years. I am pretty good with the shotgun out to about 70 yards, and know my limited range. This past year, I was able to get on some land that allows me to do some practicing. I was given two guns that were my fathers, a 222 Remington, and a 340 Weatherby Magnum. I have gotten pretty good with the 222, however, I feel a little intimidated with the 340. I know the kick may even be a bit lighter on the 340 then the 3" mag slug that I can through. But remember that I am only shooting up to 70 yards with the slug gun. At longer ranges, I am having problems with the 340, but not the 222. What would you suggest doing. I am considering purchasing an inbetween gun, so I may be able to graduate to the 340 Wby Mag. Maybe a 270 Weatherby.

My vote for a good all-around in-between gun would be the .308. Many brand names to choose from as well as many bullet sizes. Kick is not bad, especially compared to your 340 Whby. Good luck.

The .270 Wby Mag is every bit as good a long-range gun as the .340 Wby Mag. They will both kill elk to as far as anyone should realistically shoot at one.
The .270 Wby will kick a lot less, and is quite easy to manage for even the most recoil-sensitive shooter. Like Robert said, if you get a .270 Wby Mag, you may never pick up the .340 again.

It really depends on what you plan on doing with the gun. Personally I would opt for a middle of the road caliber. For (probably) all the hunting you will do, anything like .260, .270, .280, 7mm-08, .308, or .30-06 would do everything you'd ask. If you plan on doing more target shooting, I'd lean towards something with less recoil...you also want to consider ammo cost. Anything that has "magnum" associated to it will be more expensive. My personal choice in your situation would be either a .260 or 7mm-08. Both of these would be very easy to shoot, and very effective on game.

I appreciate everyone's replies. I guess, my goal is to be able to shoot the 340 Weatherby Mag accurately. I know that it is a straight shooter. But not with me at the trigger at longer ranges, at least not yet. It is a beautiful gun, and sometime down the road (not is a huge hurry), I'd love to get it out in the woods again, probably for Elk. I know that a lot of smaller caliber guns will also do the job but there is a small fire in me that would love to get the gun out again. But, not until I can shoot it accurately.
