Default Questions/Opinion for Beginner.

I got a question that I'd like your opinions on. Before I ask, let me just give you a little background. I was never much of a gun person, but am starting to get a real interest in it. I own guns, but don't use them much. Usually my choice of weapons for hunting is with a bow. However, I do shotgun hunt for deer maybe once or twice every two or three years. I am pretty good with the shotgun out to about 70 yards, and know my limited range. This past year, I was able to get on some land that allows me to do some practicing. I was given two guns that were my fathers, a 222 Remington, and a 340 Weatherby Magnum. I have gotten pretty good with the 222, however, I feel a little intimidated with the 340. I know the kick may even be a bit lighter on the 340 then the 3" mag slug that I can through. But remember that I am only shooting up to 70 yards with the slug gun. At longer ranges, I am having problems with the 340, but not the 222. What would you suggest doing. I am considering purchasing an inbetween gun, so I may be able to graduate to the 340 Wby Mag. Maybe a 270 Weatherby.
