The 270 because the balistic coefficient is better and if you're even thinking of getting a 308 then you might as well get the 30-06 in my opinion.

For hunting game more robust than deer I wholeheartedly agree....
Deer size critters and underand for target shooting, the .308 is a wonderful cartridge.

I am really curious why you would say take a 308 Win over a 270 Win for longer distances. The 270 is going to be flatter and carry more energy than a 308 with common loadings.

Few deer hunters shoot long distances, unless, of course, being out West, but there's a reason that snipers use the .308 and not the .270, don't know what it is, but I trust their judgement.

This is just a guess, but, I'd bet the choice was made based on logistics, not ballistics. The .308 has been a standard military round since the '50's. The .270 has not. Sniper rifles of the past have pretty much been GI rifles with a scope mounted. I doubt that the snipers had much of a choice. I don't know whether this is still the case, or whether snipers might now be given more leeway in their cartridge choice.

That kinda depends on which bullet weight/bullet designyou're using for each cartridge, doesn't it? Just a guess, but, wouldn't a 165 gr. boattail .308 have a better ballistic coefficient than a 150 gr. soft point .277?

But all those "tactical" bolt-actions are in .308, and consumers have a choice.

Yes, but I suspect that consumers buy .308 tactical rifles because "that's what the Marine snipers use..." I doubt that it's because the .308 is someohw ballistically superior to all other potential "sniper" rounds. So, it comesback to military logistics.

Maybe one of our military trained guys can chime in here... kdvollmer??? Do military "snipers" have a choice now as to what rifle/scope/cartridge combo they use? Have they always had a choice?
