Looking at building a custom 300 ultra mag with parts from net auction sites. Came across a Remington 700 SPS Long Action stock for under $50. Also picked up a remington 700 26" ultra mag barrel for less than $25. Both brand new with no scratches and never been fired.
1. Will these two work together?
2. How much do you think for the remaining parts (ie trigger, trigger guards, bolt, etc.)?
3. How much would a gunsmith bill me for building this if I supply all the components?

If I go thru all that trouble, to pay for fitting and labor, I would get a custom barrel, maybe Dan Lilja, and if I was going thru all that trouble to get a stock bedded for my action, I would go one step further and get a McMillian edge, or H-S. And if I was going thru all that trouble, I would put a good trigger on. Maybe a timney. Might as well throw in a nice machined trigger guard.
And if I was going thru all that trouble, I would get the action squared. But thats me.
Problem is, you can go out and buy a remington 700 300RUM for alot cheaper. I can find them used for down to 400 dollars. A gunsmith is going to charge at least 120 dollars along to screw on and set headspace. Going to charge you another 80 to bed the stock for the action. Another 45 or so to install a trigger and set it nice. Your looking at 250 dollars easy labor. Plus at least 300 for a donor action/bolt. And the bolt face will have to match.
