Best Slug for 20 ga Hastings ?
Hey all, I need help. I have a Rem 870 20 ga and just got a new Hastings rifled barrel for it. I spent a couple hours today trying to figure out what the best slug/sabbot was for my gun. I tried the Remington Slugger High Volocity, Lightfield and Winchester Supreme Platinum. I wasnt too impressed with the Lightfield or the Winchester and got the cheap Remingtons to shoot the best. (about a 4 inch group at 50 yds) In the area that I hunt in Northern IL and its not uncommon to get a good 120 yard shot and would like to know if anyone has had any luck with any certain type of ammo for that barrel to get a 2 inch group at 75 or 100 yards. Thanks in advance for your help.

You didn't say if you have a scope on it or not. I have a scoped 1187 12 gauge with a fully rifled barrel and I get good results with the Remington Sluggers too. You should be able to dial it in for 2 inch groups at at 75 yards but in my opinion anything above and out to 120 yards is stretching it. I sight mine in 2 inches high at 50 yards. My slugger drops right at 4 inches at 100 yards so, 2 inches low at 100 yards. I have shot further than 100 yards but just once. It was roughly 137 on a big doe, I held high on the back and hit right in the heart/lungs. I'm not sure on the flight of a 20 gauge.

RE: Best Slug for 20 ga Hastings ?
Thanks for the info. I also talked to another guy the other day who says to get the SST slugs. That will probably be my next step.
Also a little note for those who shoot the SST Slugs, my cousin shot at deer during firearm season, with a 12 ga, scoped from a tree stand and pulled a perfect shot right behind the shoulder. The slug entered the deer, followed the rib down 3 inches before penetrating the chest cavity. This caused us to end up recovering the deer the following morning after it went approx 3/4 of a mile where we watched it lay down and returned the next morning.

You need to find what your barrel/gun likes. My 20 ga. 870 slug gun patterns Federal 3" 5/8oz barnes expanders the best. The Hornady's are a close second with lightfields third and then Winchester platinums followed by Remington'. Funny how a Remington gun does not throw it's brand ammunition.
You need to spend the money and have a serious day at the range. The only way you will know.
