That is true, mallard, I'm pretty sure the 30-06 has taken every game animal in the world.

I have been reading this book for awhile and the guy has taken antelope to grizzly with 30 06. The reason I went and asked on here was to get your opinions. Thanks again guys.

TUK, I hate to say it, but, most inexperienced hunters and shooters, will automatically go for the magnum rifle, before mastering lesser intensity cartridges, like the .270 and .30-06, I owned and shot a .308 for 20 years, before finally, moving up to the magnum, even though my dad bought me a M70 .300 Win Mag for my 16th birthday, I traded it for the .308. and all in all, was much happier, the .308, allowed me to enjoy shooting, and master the basic fundamentals, before moving up to the magnum, did I need to move up to the .300? absolutely not, but I love shooting and hunting, and wanted a new pet. I would never consider letting a new shooter purchase a magnum of any sort, I would prefer they get a .308, or the like, they will enjoy the whole shooting experience more, if they just go with what they can handle.

Wow, you must be a mind reader, because I have been thinking that for a long time. Or at least since I have been a part of these forums and have read so many posts where people are constantly asking questions about whether they need a mag or not, or if a .270 is enough gun for Elk sized game. Man, a .270 is just a necked down .06 case with a flatter shooting bullet. Guys, the 30.06 was designed to kill much tougher game than Elk, deer or bear and that game was shooting back at them. [>:]

To many people are brain washed in todays society. It's a shame. You call your self a man. The men who hunted bears and african game with 30-30 and the 30-06 where men. You got so many candy arses in todays world who are afraid to hunt an animal with anything less than a a magnum or larger than a 30-06. I am sure if the 30-06 was the largest caliber made everyone would be saying that is more than enough gun for all wild animals. The generation are turning into brain washed babies on the type of gun you got to have to kill the biggest of big animals. Oh I would never hunt a griz with a 30-06 or 30-30. Well go have your momma change your diaper. I for one second would not hesitate to use a 30-30 or 30-06 on any wild animal alive. If you don't know where to hit them to kill them then stay the hell out of the mountains. Pansy arse kids today,This goes with quite a few adults all so. Got to have the magnums. Real men don't use magnums all the time for dangerous game. I would use any of these 2 rifles for the most dangerous game any where. I got confidence in my shots and know the power of these rifles. You can not go wrong with these rifles. You master the 30-06, you can shoot rings around the magnums.

I get an education in "magnumitis" every time i take a deer to a certain butcher shop in WV.I know the owner pretty well.i always tour the "deer yard." There areusually10-30 deerin a yard outside the shop, awaiting processing.
At least half the deer look like they have been shot with 75mm pack howitzers. Many are shot through both the shoulders and the hams. The butcher shop owner tells me that guys, mostly out of state hunters, bring their shot up deer to be processed and are surprised to get 10 pounds of meat back. They routinely accuse him of stealing their meat.

There is nothing in North America and very few creatures on the planet that I would be afraid to shoot with a 30-06 and a well constructed 180 grain bullet. Our forefathers killed everything in North America with black powder rifles and patched soft lead balls. Yes, they might have been large caliber muzzleloaders but they lacked the power of a modern 30-06. And the projectiles they were hunting with in those old smokepoles can't even begin to be compared to the bullets we have at our disposal today. A 180 grain Swift A-frame, Barnes Triple Shock, Trophy Bonded Bear Claw, or even a Nosler Partition will more than adequately penetrate anything on our side of the pond.

As far as the butcher being accused about robbing meat that is part and parcel asan aweful lotoffolks have no clue what a skinned or unskinned deer has with regards to usable meat to begin with. I have gotten a lot myself being I sideline butcher game. Off topic sorry mallard!!
As far as the grizzly and 3006 yes it is doable, most in the know consider it marginal at best(which isn't myself, I have never hunted grizzly and really have no desire too at this point). You are free to use whatever you want but personally I'd like something a little more substantial in my hands that was actually designed to handle the larger bullet class. While the 3006 will accept all .308 bullets it certainly isn't effecient with all of those bullets I think most will agree 150-180 are its likes and as such even with todays bullets it's on the outside looking in when dangerous game are in the horizon.
Danagerous game other then bears usually come with a min. cartridge of the likes of375H&H. I also have not hunting in africa or in alberta for woodland bison where such a min. applies but I have no reason to doubt their expertise/suggestion, figure their must be a reason other than magnum craze!
I believesome arebetter for the application vs just getting by. The 06 is perfectly fine for upto moose in NA and non dangerous game elsewhere, as are others. If you think your tirty..tirty or 06 is up to the world task knock yourself out

What do this prove? IMO nothing other than bad shot placement and possibly wrong bullet for the task. The same result can happen with a 3006 as well!!

Skeeter, I couldn't agree more, I can't believe that stigma that surrounds owning a magnum caliber rifle, people think you have something to prove, and that you are not a very good shot, I beg to differ, a guy can shoot a .300 Win Mag, just as good as a .270, if he practices, there is nothing wrong with the magnum rifle, end of story.

Yeah. I hit a mulie doe in the front shoulder with a 145 grain Speer Hot Core from a 280. Pretty much destroyed the whole front half of that critter. It was about a 50 yard shot. That was the worst meat damage I have ever seen done to a deer. I never used that bullet again although it probably would have been fine at 200 yards.
