Savage Rifle question
I am looking for a rifle, a shooting rifle, an accurate rifle. I read a lot about the savage guns but never had one...are they as accurate as they say ?
Im looking to get either a .243 or a 7mm-08. I will use it for mainly plinking coyotes in Indiana, and an occasional rare hunt for deer in Florida, and lots of fun shooting at the range. I will also probobly get into reloading.... so ANY suggestions on my caliber and gun choice from EXPERIANCED users of the guns and calibers I will greatly appreciate.
Thanks
Tom

RE: Savage Rifle question
I have 3 Savage rifles and all of them are very accurate. For the price I don't think there is any other bolt rifle that offers such an accurate, reliable and durable rifle. If you are shooting coyotes mainly then the 243 Win would be a great choice, but then again so would the 7mm-08 Rem. Both are fine deer cartridges as well. Can't go wrong with either one. Both are highly accurate, flexible, low recoil rounds.

RE: Savage Rifle question
I have 2 Savage rifle's,a 110 in the .243 and a 116 in the 7mm-08,both accurate. The 7mm-08 has a heavy barrel and I put a Timney trigger on it for long-distance woodchuck hunting...500+ yards! Thats the only downfall with Savage...the triggers! Both are fine calibers for deer and "plinking"...<img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

RE: Savage Rifle question
PaJack, I was lucky with my triggers. One was a tad heavy, but I adjusted it down to where I like it. If I was making a varmint rifle out of one I would probably change the trigger. Can I ask what the ballpark figure is for the trigger you put on?

RE: Savage Rifle question
From what I understand Savage will be offering a completely adjustable trigger that customers can tune on their bolt rifles..I understand it will be available in January. Rifle Basix also makes a replacement for the Savage but I am really interested in this new trigger along with the corresponding rifle probably in 7-08.

RE: Savage Rifle question
I have a new 110 in 30-06, I measured the trig pull to be about 6 lbs (suspended weights with a string method) and have never taken any of this rifle apart yet. Is the factory trigger adjustable, even a little bit? Or do I have to do a full replacement.
If it is adjustable, what is involved with the job, what must be taken apart and is it just a simple turn of a screw to lighten the trigger pull? Does this opperation impact the rifle and make it less safe.
I have seen timney triggers for about 60 bucks but dont know how much it would cost for someone to do it for me.

RE: Savage Rifle question
I was about to buy one today but couldn't get past how the trigger felt. Yesterday I was shopping around and found one that had a sweet trigger. I guess some are better than others. I was basically told that it's a good idea to replace the trigger after buying one??? Plus, another reason I didn't get the savage is price. Right now Ruger has a $40 rebate and tosses in the scope rings. So, if you subtract the $80 then the Ruger is only a few $$$ more than a Savage. I've also heard that resale value of a Savage isn't too good. I know.........keep em! Don't sell them. Make sure you dry fire the Savage to feel the trigger before you lay your money down.
