With all the talk of the Savage rifle being such a fine shooter I have been thinking of getting one in a 30/06. Now I just can't see droping a $200-300 scope on top of a $300 rifle. So, I'm opting for either a Simmons Aetec 2X10 or a Sightron 3X9 (model name unknown). Has anyone had experience with either scope? My problem is that I've never hunted with anything but a Leupold and fear these scopes won't hold up. I don't quit when the weather gets ugly so being waterproof is just as important as it being able to handle the recoil of an 06.

A GUN IS ONLY GOOD AS IS THE SCOPE. I WOULD RATHER HAVE A QUALITY SCOPE ON ANY GUN. AS FAR AS THE 2 SCOPES TO WROTE ABOUT, SIMMONS IS NOT QUALITY, BUT ITS NOT JUNK, I LOVE LEUPOLD SCOPES, ALSO TRY THE NIKONS, I HAVE A BUCKMASTER SERIS ON MY MUZZLELOADER AND FOR $200 IS GREAT 3-9X40

Well out of the two named i would go sightron! i don't own one but would. they are clear and have the best warranty bar none. i think they are just not well known enough.

Definitely Sightron...they are just not well known at the moment but they are 1 pc construction quality glass which is multi-coated and they have a great adjustment system ...along with light weight and very good eye relief.I have not heard a negative on them to date. A couple of the national dealers stock them but in my case none of the local guys keep them in stock.

I was down in Youngsville NC, at Sightron headquarters last week and spent about 3 hours looking at all their models. I was impressed with the cleairty. They are as clear as any Leupolds I have ever looked through. A good friend of mine evaluated a couple of Sightron scopes for a gun/shooting magazine. He stated that he had never seen a scope that was so precise in the repeatability of the click adjustments, to make a sight adjustment for long range, then be able to return it to the 100yd zero setting and it be there. As for the ability to take recoil, he was shooting one of the Sightron scopes on a Savage 10ML-II smokeless powder muzzleloader, which when loaded with heavier loads acheive approximately the same performance as a .375 H&H and .458 Win Mags., with not quite the same amount of recoil. These same loads have rendered a bunch of Tascos, Simmons, Bushnells, Redfields, and even a couple Leupolds to pure trash, bu the 2 Sightrons (a 2-8x42 & 4-12x44) have been going strong for 2 years now.

I have a 2-8x42 now, that I don't have a gun to put it on. I'll have to rectify problem here soon.

Thanks for the input! I did buy a Sightron II in a 3X9X44 today. With an over the counter lifetime replacement guarantee! How do you top that? It don't matter what state, no receipt needed...just say it's broke and you get handed a new one. (It just better not ever need replaced!) I was definitely impressed with their clarity too. But I just couldn't drop it on a Savage. After shopping around and seeing the Ruger's $40 rebate and good quality rings that go along with the rifle it just seemed like a better idea to spen an extra $15 on the Ruger. I went with a Ruger M77 S/S in a .308 She looks and feels sweet. Can't wait to get to the range on shoot it in.
