Thanks for all of the comments, it is greatly appreciated. I am leaning towards a 20ga as of right now. Seems to be quite a few different rounds to pick from now a days. I am going to do some more research and see what options are available. But I do like the look of the Ultra Slug hunter. Thanks again.

I absolutely would go with a remington 1100. I have a 12 gauge which has very little recoil relative to other guns I own. I also have an older model 20 gauge remington 1100 built on a 12 gauge frame and recoil is barely noticeable, however you can not get rifled barrels, (or any new factory barrel for that matter). I ownwinchester and ithaca pumps in 12 gauge and the recoil is very noticeable. I have a 20 gauge Ithaca which kicks just as bad as the 12 gauge since it is a lighter gun. I do have an ithaca deerslayer IIin 12 gauge which is much heavier and almost fun to shoot, but you would have to find one used. I have never had a need for 3" shells, (the 2 3/4 are plenty accurate out to 100 yds), so I would go with a new or even used 1100. Rifled barrels are readily available. Sounds like you all ready have what you are looking for.

You need a gas operated 20 gauge semi. It will be the softest shooting slug gun. If the scope hits you in the head and you easily get hurt then consider a long eye relief sight like a red dot or holosight.

The 20ga sabot slugs are actually quite impressive. I had no idea that they look that good in terms of trajectory, and energy. I checked out the ballistics for these.

Hornady

Hopefully they group better than they do in 12ga.

Winchester

Remington

Lightfield

Out of all of these rounds, one should group well. And all are perfectly capable out to 125 yeards, and some out to 150.

And the Ultra Slug Hunter is looking better and better. 8 Pounds in the 20ga model, and with a scope it should be pushing 9 pounds. And that should be plenty easy on my noggin. Thanks again for everyones input, it is greatly appreciated.

Concussions occur when the head is accelerated or decelerated so rapidly that the brain actually strikes the inside of the skull. Therefore, anything that you can do to minimize the amount and speedyour head is displaced when you shoot your gun might reduce the risk of further concussions. In addition to a heavy semi-auto shotgun, maybe you would want to consider a neck brace or exercises to strenghten your neck muscles so that your head is not pushed as far back and up when you shoot.

Also, you may want to avoid hunting alone. As you have noted, becuase of your past history of concussions your risk of a future one is high no matter what precautions you take. It could be dangerous if you are in the woods by yourself and you fired a shot, suffered a concussion and became disoriented. I suffered a stroke last year and my wife no longer lets me go hunting by myself out of fear it could happen again and I would be stranded in the woods.
