Default Bullet Grain

My Rem. 700 in 30.06 is ordered and I think it's almost ready. I'm new to rifles. Will be hunting deer with it at first then maybe other stuff. What grain bullet should I look into and what brands should I try to see what works best? Thanks in advance.

I would go with a 165 gr in Rem, Win or Hornady. Great bullets for deer and will work on other animals too. Try different brabds and use the one that shoots the best. Oh, forgot Federals, many like them but not me.

I agree, a 165 grain bullet of some sort is what I'd start out with. As suggested, try different brands to see what shoots best in your rifle. I handload all my ammo now and haven't shot factory stuff in quite a while, but when I did Federal Premium was my favorite brand.

Here's another vote for 165 grain for whitetail sized animials with a .308 or 30-06. As for brand, youwon't know what will shoot best untill you try them, so start out buying what ever is easy for you to find local...

My suggestion would be any .308 diameter bullet in the 150 - 180 gr range that shoots well out of your rifle. Hornady, Sierra or Nosler would be my choice.

I like the Federal 150 grain (BLUE BOX) ammo. Its loaded with Speer Grand Slam bullets. They grouped well in My 30-06 and performed very well on Mule deer. When I hand load for the 30-06 for deer, I load either the 150 grain Nosler Ballistic tips or the Sierra Pro-Hunter bullets. Also you can't go wrong with anything loaded with Nosler Partition bullets. Federal for one loads these as well. Good hunting.

I've got a Model 700 .30-06. I use Winchester 150 gr. Power Points, and they work great. They shoot into an inch at 100 yards, and have 4 shots/4 kills on whitetails with it. I really don't see the point in paying for premium loads for thin-skinned game like whitetails, and 150's are more than enough of weight to get the job done on a whitetail.

You might also try the Remington Express 150 gr. Core-Lokt's.

I use 100 gr Core-Lokt's on deer in my .243, and they work great as well. They're capable of 1/2 inch groups at 100 yards in my rifle and my son and I are 4 for 4 with them as well.

If all you're after is deer, I think it's pointless to spend the extra money for premium ammo. I think you're better off buying more of the Remington/Winchester inexpensive stuff and spend a little additional practice time at the range.

I agree with ipscshooter. Premium bullets are nice, but for whitetails, a 150gr. core-lokt from remington will kill just as well. The key is shot placement, so work on finding the load that shoots consistently from your rifle. Anything from 150 to 180 grains. If premium bullets shoot best, by all means, use them. But if the less expensive stuff shoots just as well, you don't need to spend the extra money on premium ammo.

I would also try Federal Fusions. My Remington 700 likes them the best.
