As far as "ringing" a 12 ga. shell goes, I have also heard of it being done, but never tried it myself. Can you imagine the added recoil or worse if it was fired in a super tight full choked gun? I personally wouldn't want to be behind it, or anywhere around it. I remember taking the front bead out of an old single-shot 12 ga. extra full choke with a "punkin ball" years ago, when I was just a kid. It not only took out the bead, bot split the barrel from the bead to the end of the muzzle. That was the end of that kind of foolishness for me. Kicked like a S.O.B. as I remember it, too.

The dimes trick sounds pretty useless.
I have seen the notch around the hull
done and, while surprisingly accurate,
it left my cousin wishing he had'nt done
it (12ga kicked BAD) and could'nt be good on
the barrel.

My pheasant hunters from MN decided they needed to show me the "ring around the shell" trick last fall. I was skeptical, I didn't htink they were serious. Next thing I know there is a shell being cut, loaded into a Benelli, and BAM he left a good hole thru a fence post. I have no desire to do this to a shell, but it was kinda neat seeing someone not skeered of blowing up their shotgun or themself. As to the dime trick, I seen a western where they pert near cut a guy in half with a load of dimes....

Frankly, I can think of no reason to fill a 12 Ga shell with dimes as lead BBs are cheap and work expremely well......
Historically at times of war folks took to doing wierd things to their ammunition because of severe shortages of commercial ammunition. I know a guy that claimed he cut the outside of the shotshell around almost totally where the bb level was so that when the shell was fired the entire foreward section of the shell went out the muzzle in one piece instead of ejecting the BBs only.....this was his way of simulating a slug when he couldn't get slugs.....He says it killed deer.....who knows.....but we can get almost anything we want today so why tempt fate with these type of experiments that might cause injury or damage the gun?????

I saw the "Wild West Tech" program on The History Channel, too. As I recall, they said that the deputy Sheriff who was guarding "Billy the Kid" when he was arrested awaiting trial loaded a stack of dimes in the 12 guage side by side shotgun instead of buckshot. Supposedly, when "Billy" shot the other deputy while escaping, he then greeted the shotgun's owner with a "howdy" as he walked back from across the street and shot him with his own shotgun left in the room they had been holding the prisoner.
I think it was Mythbusters that tried this remotely, because as said this could also potentially blowup in a person's face, if the dimes got wedged in the barrel as exiting. The dimes came out in that test, but they were very ineffective barely penetrating whatever target (pig carcass or something) they shot it at.
Kids, DON'T TRY THIS AT HOME!!
