I simply don't see the need or sport in that? (now if the shots are kept within 2-300 yards I guess I would retract the sporting comment...but then there's the need issue)

BUT...I agree, if it is legal, and you have the funds, and you make a humane kill...more power to 'em. I can gaurantee that I'll stick with those wimpy .30s and 7&8 Mausers. Heck before its said and done, if I end up in a state with a rifle season I may be one of those crazy minimalist that heads to woods with 243!!!

I'm at school in KY so I've recently been introduces to the rifle+deer equation. I grew up and live in a state with shotgun/muzzleloader/pistol seasons...so the idea of a 200yards shot even seems unsporting at times.

Deer #2 was shot at just over 700 yards, still too close
if it was so close why did they shoot it in the gut??????, i realize hitting a deer at that kind of range would be an accomplishment, but that appears to be a poor shot to me, the idea is to hit a small target not just in the area of it, plus if that were a human they would have missed, unless the human was laying on their side/verses standing, ah!!! good shootin there boys[&o]

I like that response m.t, and I totally agree with you on that point. If 2 guys can't hit a target in the vitals at what they claim to be a (short distance), then what business is it of theirs to even attempt a longer shot. I believe this gives long range shooters a bad name.( I have nothing against guys that shoot long range and have the compatence to do it well and effectively) But Ialso think stories like thisgives high hopes to inexperienced shooters that can't hit paper at 200 yards with guns (much less than magnum cartidges)and makes them want to go out and try longer shots than what they are experienced to do (with guns that are VERY magum.)

I agree with M.T and Buckstalker.....looks likea poor shot to me also. and there is definatly no sport in it. But if that what you call hunting then thats fine I would call it killing. Hunting to me is bringing that same buck in to my standinstead of taking him at almost a half mile away....but oh well whatever makes you feel good about yourself

rusty in all fairness that could have been the case, but this was in the post, like i said a very poor shot, especially considering how close it was[&o]

Deer #2 was shot at just over 700 yards, still too close, but trying to find co-operative deer on short notice is difficult. This 1 was shot witha 750 gr Hornady Amax, which is widely thought of to be a decent hunting bullet for the 50s. WRONG!! The bullet impacted slightly too far back, entering the gut. No exit wound was made, the bullet completely fragmented inside the deer, causing unbelieveable tissue damage. Hence a lot of lost meat. I do NOT recommend using the Amaxs on game, they are great target bullets, but my experience with them for hunting was very poor performance.

I dont think your goin crazy 308hunter, im sure i remember somebody had or borrowed a 50 bmg and was going to use it for a deer hunt. i say if you have the money and strenghth go ahead and shoot a deer with a 50 BMG , its a little overkill but so what. i shot a deer or two with a 458 mag.

P.Sthe 458 does in fact kick , it is controlable, and it dosent work very good on a deer with 510 gr. soft points.
