T/C Contender to carbine question
Anybody put a long barrel on there Contender?
First off I have two frames and three barrels. 30-30 357mag. and 22mag.
I'm looking for a gun for my daughter.
What I'm thinking of is getting a rifle length barrel and a custom thumbhole stock to make short enough for her. I was thinking of going with a 243. orabout a18"30-30 barrel if she can handle the kick.
Anybody got any thoughts? I aint never messed with a Contender any, just got them collecting dust in the closet.

I don't think the 243 is an option on the contender. The Encore, Yes but not the contender. You can get a list of options at Fox ridge outfitters. I know you can get carbine barrels in 223, 30-30 44 Mag and many more. I have had carbine barrels in 223 and 44 Mag for the Contender. SKS I think it is handles carbine barrels for the Contender as well. I also had the carbine 45-70 barrel but that one would not be for youngsters. The Contender will not handle the pressures that the Encore frame will.

I knew the Encore comes in 243 but I didntknow ifthe Continder did. I want to get an Encore for myself and I had two contender frames already. I got to thinking today I could get me an Encore and a barrel and stock for her.
I wonder how bad that 44 mag kicks in a carbine contender. My 14 yearold son uses a Marlin lever action 44mag.
Heres what I want....... one from eabco.com

The 44 Mag barrel recoil was not bad at all unless I loaded it really hot with Heavy bullets for Black Bear. At that point it had a little kick to it. I had the Synthetic Butt Stock I also had the tripod on mine.

After doing some reading on contender barrels, I might look more into the .300 Whisper. Light recoil in .150gr bullet. I think that for a short range kids gun this would be better. And give me a reason to get back into reloading.

Mike, I have a 30-30 carbine barrel for my contender and it shouts real nice, and you can use pointed bullets with the contender.Although there is now a contender g-2 that will interchange barrels with the standard contender, but will allow you to cock the gun more than once. With the standard model you must break open the action if you cock the hammer but then decide not to shoot.

yea Bill I know all about that re-cockin business. The first deer I shot with the 10inch 30-30 barrel came in and I cocked it. While waiting for a broad side shot the doe turned around and left. About the same time I finished de-cocking it, the doe came back to me and stoped about 40 yards broad side perfect shot. Some how I pulled it off and opened the gun and recocked it in time for a good clean shot. It was my first deer with a pistol.

RE: T/C Contender to carbine question
RR,
Cor-Bon has some loaded 125 & 150 gr. hunting loads. I'm guessing that the bullet would need to be a real soft one for slow speed expansion. This is the only problem I see with this .300 Whisper. Im going to be calling JD at SSK and get their opinion and a load for short range deer huning. He invinted the round so he ought to know.
I did some reaserch last night heres some quotes I read:

For small whitetail deer, JD's recommended bullets to me (in order of preference) were: 125 gr NBT, 125 gr Speer TNT, and 130 gr Horndayd SSP. For supersonic hunting loads, he rec'd H110/W296/N 110, or AA 1680. In my 12" VVCG barrel, I easily get 2200-2250 w/ 125-130 gr bullets and H110 or W296. (My personal loads--all use Rem 7 1/2 primers and brass from SSK: 125 gr NBT/19.0 gr H110/2.462" OAL/2254 fps; 130 gr Hornady SSP/19.5 gr WW296 OR 19.5 gr H110/2.065" OAL/2200-2220 fps.) It's a very good hunting round that's amazingly efficient. The 300/221 looks to be a ballistic twin to the 30 Herrett, a legendary deer round. I killed 2 whitetail deer w/ mine last year.
The 125 Nosler BTip is the bullet of choice and will expand well at Whisper velocities. The 125 Remington bullet will not.
