I am guessing when you say "back up" gun you mean if the primary rifle fails in anyway he has another rifle to take it place?
You also state it will be srickly a "back up" gun. For me, the simple solution would be to try to get an indentical rifle set setup. That way he could just pick it up and go on with the hunt without a glitch. One doesnt have to learn ballistics of another caliber either and the rifle should handle the same.I know this probably a dull way of going about itbut IMHO I think it's quite practical.

Actually Hunter4life, there is only .007 inches (7 thousandths rather than 7 hundredths) between the two.
To be honest, if it were my delema between a 7mm and a .270 magnum they both would be in the WSM configuration. I have no use for a belted bottleneck case. The belt is useless and only takes up magazine space when that space could be used for either another round or extra case capasiity.
Now between the two bullet diameters I would choose the .270 over the 7mm. simply because it will do anything the 7mm will do but isn't so close to the 300 magnum to group the cartridges into one lump. I prefer to spread out the calibers a little until I get a wide range of power then I can start filling in the gaps with more similar calibers.

I have taken a back up gun several times on hunting trips. My reasoning was also to have a spare in case of Mechaniacl trouble with the main gun or scope. I never have had to use the spare gun as my rifle or optica have never failed me. It is a good plan though if you are traveling a goodly distance. As far as spreading out the calibers, If it is a backup gun I would want one that performs in a very simular way ballistically.
