Is 300 Win. Mag. good for everything or nothing?
I originally purchased a Browning 300 Win. Mag. bolt action rifle, thinking I could use it for just about any type of game. But after talking to several people, I'm wondering how multipurpose the caliber really is. I was planning on usingthisgun for the upcoming deer season, but from what I hear, thecaliber is a little too muchfor the local deer here. The main reason I purchased it though, was for hunting biggame up north (moose, elk, grizzley, etc.) But after looking at various large game calibers, mine is the weakest one on the list. Making methink that it's over poweredfor deer and under powered for biggame. Does anyone out there have personal experience with this caliber and taking down moose, elk, bear, etc?
Thanks,
David
P.S. Am I in the right forum? I couldn't find one for ammuntion.

If the recoil wasn't about 25% above most shooter's tolerance level, the .300 Win Mag might be the best all around big game rifle out there. Amazingly accurate, serious horsepower for big critters, capable of taking smaller animals without undue meat damage (with the right bullet, of course), and not real hard on barrels. If I had to cut back to just two rifles, they would be the 6MM-284 and the .300 Win Mag. (Sure hope it never comes to that)

You would be hard pressed to find a more effective round for what you mention. Load it with a 180 Barnes or 200 partition for the grizzlies and use a 180 partition for everything else you can find. Little much for deer but they likely won't complain as they hit the deck.

Oldelkhunter,
I myself have switched from a .338 to a 7 mag also but he asked about a suitable rifle for grizzly. When you throw those nasty critters in the mix then I don't think the .300 is overkill. I have found my 7mm rem mag kills game just as quickly as my .338 did. The sad reality is being an easterner I will likely never hunt grizzly so I don't worry much about grizzly guns.

OEH - are you serious? I have not found the 7 Rem Mag to kill one bit better than a .270, but consider the .300 Magnums to be in a whole plateau above these two. I'm sure, like a lot of things, it depends on what bullet you shoot and where you shoot them . . . .
