I'd go along with the 30/30 for black bear, but would definitely pick the .243 for deer. It has a lot more reach than the 30/30.

depends on the shooter/rifle combination. Ive blasted a couple deer at the near 200 yard mark with a 30-30 loaded with 150 grain sierra pro hunter bullets. 200 yards is about the maximum for either cartridge on deer size game. the only true advantage the 243 has over the 30-30 at that range is it is much flatter shooting and doesnt require any kentucky windage on deer sized game if zeroed at 100 yards and shot to 200 yards.

i would definately say that the 30-30 is what you want for bear. but i have to disagree about the 243 just being a varmit cartridge. a guy i hunt with exclussively uses the 243 and swears by it. it's good out to about 300 yards if not more. it doesn't have much recoil but more than enough power for deer and antelope.

RE: .243 vs. 30-30
SHoNUFF, I posted my picture with the Black Bear I shot with a
Win 30-30 "Carbine" using a PMC 30-30 "Starfire HP" round.
I always chamber a different round for my first round the rest are
FN in the tube. I'm not saying all bears, but 30-30 will kill a black bear.
I forgot to mention about the .243. I have taken many deer with
FED 100gr NP ammo, but will not use it on Black Bear.

rebel i'm about surprised you aren't trying to talk him into getting a 6.5 swede. you definately plead a good case. i'm about tempted to get one. it sounds like it's more suited for what he's talking about the than the 243 or 30-30.

Hunter, I have'nt shot the .243 in a few years. I started to use the Ruger
6.5mmSwede using Norma 156gr "Alaska" ammo from deer to Moose.
KonaBoy tried to upload my bull moose picture that I shot in Alberta in 1995
but for some reason could not.
Check to see who carries the .260 in a higher grain than 140gr?

RE: .243 vs. 30-30
Well if he won't I will. Any .260 or 7/08 would be ideal for this combination of game. The 140s in the .260 or the 160s in the 7/08 are enough bullet for any black bear that ever walked. However, a more natural combination of targets is deer and varmints for which a .243 is plenty of rifle, the .260 or 7/08 would need hand loading whereas the .243 ammo is available anywhere for either class.
