I'd go along with the 30/30 for black bear, but would definitely pick the .243 for deer. It has a lot more reach than the 30/30.

depends on the shooter/rifle combination. Ive blasted a couple deer at the near 200 yard mark with a 30-30 loaded with 150 grain sierra pro hunter bullets. 200 yards is about the maximum for either cartridge on deer size game. the only true advantage the 243 has over the 30-30 at that range is it is much flatter shooting and doesnt require any kentucky windage on deer sized game if zeroed at 100 yards and shot to 200 yards.
