Dont' rule out the braided lines yet, I would suggest 20(6#d.) or 30(8#d.) pound test power pro. It' s one of the best braids out there, and It' s about half the price of spiderwire, I would also reccomend takeing the reel to a sporting goods store where they spool the line on for you, the only reason the line would cut in to it' s self is because it is not spooled on tight enough, a braid has to be spooled on much tighter than a mono, and you also have to put a mono backing on so the line does not slip on the spool. If you take it to a store they should know all this and spool it on right, and you wont have any problems with it.
But,... if your dead set on goin with a mono now, I would also recomend trilene XT 17#
