After two weeks of gobbler hunting, I decided to give the birds a break this morning and go fishing..
A few weeks back there was a thread on this forum about favorite trout lures...Buck Magnet told about using the Yo-Zuri Pins minnow and catching a bunch of big trout, so I had bought a few and have been wanting to give them a try...I took my UL spinning rig and also threw my fly rod and vest into the truck...
I fished an "artificial lures only" stretch of a nearby trout stream...
The Yo -Zuri worked GREAT....Casting it and retrieving across current, I caught about a dozen big brown trout and lost several others...My biggest fish taped an even 20 inches and weighed over 3 pounds...I had to keep him because he had INHALED the lure clear down into his gills..Tried to EAT the durn thing... He was the only one I kept...He'll go on the grill and make a nice meal ( and some leftovers) for my girlfriend and me...
I fished until about 9:30 AM with the plug and it was still catching trout, but some mayflies started hatching and I really wanted to try to catch some fish on flies...I switched to my fly rod and caught another half dozen fish on a pheasant tail nymph...Despite the hatch ( I think they were Quill Gordons) the trout were not feeding on the surface at all, but were eating the nymphs instead...

It sounds like you have had some great luck. Up here it is still a little early but, I have caught 4 native brookies so far. I was using a streamer on my fly rod and caught an 11, 2-- 12 and a 14 incher. It has been slow with the high water and the fact it is still to cold for very much action. I went yesterday morning after work and only caught 1 but was able to see a few big ones chasing bait fish around. It is still nice to go out and try them though.

Chuck...No reason to be sorry about keeping trout, as long as you like to eat them...I enjoy them myself, but day in and day out I prefer some other fish, like bluegills and perch...Rather than stockpiling trout in the freezer, I prefer to keep enough for a meal to eat fresh, and then when I get hungry for trout again, it gives me an excuse to go fishing again ..As if I NEED an excuse to go fishing...
...
The water I fished yesterday hasspecial regulations...Last Time I checked it was a limit of three per day, minimum length 12"...
Phil...Those are some FINE brookies...Around here, any brook trout over 10" is a big one...

Sounds like an awesome day of trout fishing. And those Yo-Zuris are worth the money they catch fish and big ones at that. And i my self have been noticing that the trout still arent all that interested in the dries we are having BWO hatching's and the fish dont want them at all. But throw on a nymph and your into the trout right away. Congrats.
