Trout fishing this morning
After two weeks of gobbler hunting, I decided to give the birds a break this morning and go fishing..
A few weeks back there was a thread on this forum about favorite trout lures...Buck Magnet told about using the Yo-Zuri Pins minnow and catching a bunch of big trout, so I had bought a few and have been wanting to give them a try...I took my UL spinning rig and also threw my fly rod and vest into the truck...
I fished an "artificial lures only" stretch of a nearby trout stream...
The Yo -Zuri worked GREAT....Casting it and retrieving across current, I caught about a dozen big brown trout and lost several others...My biggest fish taped an even 20 inches and weighed over 3 pounds...I had to keep him because he had INHALED the lure clear down into his gills..Tried to EAT the durn thing... He was the only one I kept...He'll go on the grill and make a nice meal ( and some leftovers) for my girlfriend and me...
I fished until about 9:30 AM with the plug and it was still catching trout, but some mayflies started hatching and I really wanted to try to catch some fish on flies...I switched to my fly rod and caught another half dozen fish on a pheasant tail nymph...Despite the hatch ( I think they were Quill Gordons) the trout were not feeding on the surface at all, but were eating the nymphs instead...
