Few years back when I was looking at a 30-06 I considered the 710. Went to Dick's and picked one up. cycled the bolt one time and I wasn't interested any more. It just felt chinsy. I bought a savage 111 combo for less. the scope sucked but the rifle doesn't It shoots a good group at 100 yards and I have a feeling I'll be passing it down to my kids some day.
Also, I picked up a .270 win Weatherby Vanguard at Walmart recently. got it for less than the 710. I'd look around and find something else.

xd9x19- your question to the serious hunter thing. i think what most of us were talking about was that when you shoot a lot in the off season then go out and hunt hard all day as many days as you can no matter what the weather or what time of day.

i'll tell you what when i am trecking though the streams, snow, hail, wind and climbing every mountain from here to tomorrow and i finally get a shot i want a rifle i know will handle the task.

the 710 is more set up for the guys that get a gun shoot 3 bullets to make sure the gun is on then go out and hunt 2 days for 3 hours.

i am sorry but i could never see buying one. you can find other guns that are cheaper and a hole lot better. i have no clue why reminton ever made the 710 to begin with. and i think they should make it $100-150 cheaper.

I was at the local Wal-Mart Sunday, and they have the savage package gun for $250. I don't think even the 710 can beat that price. I've never owned one, so I can't speak from experience on it.

Went to the range yesterday with my 710. I still need to tweak the scope a bit because I'm sighted in at 100 yards, just left a inch or so. Probably want to sight it an inch high or so to be dead on at 200.

Anyway, my final four shots were with Federal Vital-shok 150 gr. Sierra Gameking BTSP bullets. I took 3 shots and my son took the fourth. I got a grouping on 1/2" for 3 shots and 1" for the set of four (I'm blaming the "flyer" on my son.)

I'm still got a box of Remington CoreLokt bullets (150gr PSP) that I'll try, but can anyone see spending additional $$$ to try to get a better grouping? I wouldn't appear to be worth the time and money. My max range at this stage of the game would be 150 or 200 yards, given the standard conditions in which I hunt.

Your a serious hunter when you seriously train or prepare for hunting. Most think to do this, you have to practice, practice, practice. With a 710, you can't have the gun rebarreled. And the heart of the gun, the action, is not worth working on to make it a practical shooter. All you can do is hope it shoots well out of box, and go with it. And I shoot out barrels every once in a while. So a 710 wouldn't be practical for a person who seriously's practices like I and alot of my brethren on this page.

So 1/2" groups at 100 yards isn't "practical"? You're kidding, right? How much more practical would I need than that - and probably 99% of hunting situations? I'm a hunting newbie, so forgive my skepticism, but I'm not trying to drive nails at 300 yards in the rain with a 20mph crosswind.

If becoming serious means spending thousands and thousands of dollars on ammo to make one shot or even a handful of shots that you wouldn't otherwise make in the course of a lifetime, then I'll have to be content to stay in the "non-serious" class.

I think you are misunderstanding bigcountry's point. A serious hunter knows where his rifle shoots and any distance he is comfortable taking a shot. This knowledge does not come from ballistic tables, it comes from hundreds of rounds downrange at the given distances in question. The 710 has a pressed in barrel, not a threaded barrel. I am anxious to see just how long the thing stays pressed in after extensive shooting. I had a 22 revolver with a pressed in barrel once and the thing actually shot loose.

Xd, well I would be willing to bet ya a good 700 against your 710 that you don't have a 1/2" shooter. I would even bet it consistently can't get 1" groups consistently at 100yards. Bud, your in the wrong forum throwing around that stuff. Come on up to MD or meet me at my other house in Eastern Ky to settle up on that bet.

bigcountry- said it best. i can't see spending money on a gun that if i burn the barrel i couldn't replace it. and i had no clue that the barrel was pressed. i never knew that someone would press a barrel? makes no sence to me.

well i if you are happy with your buy thats good. it just is not a gun i myself would ever buy

It's all luck of the draw. My P.O.S. 710 will out shoot my boss's 700BDL. My main gripe with my 710 is with the bolt. God help you if you ever need to make a quick follow up shot with it, you'll probably end up with the bolt in one hand and the rest of the rifle in your other. I'll keep the P.O.S. until I shoot the barrel out or it falls in a deep part of the swamp, but I'll never buy another one. It's definately not one Remington's finest firearms.
