RE: new member has ammo questions Savage 111
I'll assume you haven't sighted in yet. Way too often guys buy the expensive/premium ammo to initially sight in with and it's often a waste of money. Buy the cheapest you can find, and get yourself on the board, and look at how close the grouping is, that will tell you more about what your gun likes. Then once you are on the boardyou cantry some otherloads and see how they group. My dad and I each shoot .270's. His only shoots well with 140gr Hornaday soft points, mine shoots well with 130 and 150, but not 140's. additionally Core locts and Hornaday SST's group the best in my rifle, I tried some Hornaday interlocts and winchester ballistic tips and they were spraying 4-5" groups, so again the most expensive stuff isn't always the best for a particular rifle.

150 gr for deer..i havent had much luck with core lokt..failure to expand at close ranges....silvertips or sst's work well in 150 gr out of a 30-06...for elk you need to seriously think about going larger than 180 though...elk are big..way bigger than most people realize...i would go with a 200 gr hard cast lead...good job on the rifle though..savages are hard to beat and for the money they are near impossible to beat...good luck and shoot often
