Just purchased a Ruger 10/22. I really don't like the stock sights that came on it. They're bulky, at least the rear sight is. I have a hard time accurately shooting it and an even harder time adjusting the sights. How accurately can the gun be shot stock? I really dont want to spend more than I spent on the gun to get a custom barrel.

so don't put a custom barrel on it. Just put a 4-6 power scope on it. That rifle is capable of pretty good accuracy from the factory, and reliable as hell too. I rean close to 100,000 rounds through mine the 2nd summer I had it as a kid. I'd hit the gun show once a month a buy about 25,000 rounds ( this is back when ammo for everything was still cheap....about 16 years ago) never had a problem with it. Lots of aftermarket for it out there, so you might think about a new trigger though.

There's a lot than can be done to the rifle to get even match grade accuracy from factory stock parts. If you are handy working on them and have a detailed knowledge about this particular model, you can actually get a "sleeper" rifle-looks like stock but shoots like custom. The first way of course,is a good trigger job. next yyou can glass bed and free float barrel-this includes reaming inside of barrel band on barrel part-not forend stock part. Milling bolt face to .043 rim depth really helps on headspace and accuracy. The last, most complex, upgrade you can do to your 10/22 invloves setting the barrel back to acchive a tighter chamber. This step shouldn't be attempted without extensive machining experience however.

Look at Midway USA online to find a new stock they have them starting at $40. I am getting a 10/22 soon and looking at one of the stock barrel combo sets they have for $150.

I have a stock stainless 10/22. You can tackdrive with just about any ammo there is. The gun definitely outperforms my capability as is. I am an average shot with a rifle but I've made some crazy shots on game.

The 10/22 are good plinkers out of the box but not serious shooter without some work and $$ poured into them. Remove and discard all of the parts made by Ruger and replace them with parts made by Volquartsen and you'll have a very nice rifle.

I just got mine for christmas and it is a shooter out of the box. Iron sights are killing squirrel size targets at 40 yards no problem. Let me get a scope next week and all the tree rats within a hundred miles will be having nightmares.
